Match report Radlett 4th XI v Wheathamstead 19th June 2010

This was a thoroughly decent performance from the 4ths in defeat after a good, well-fought cricket match. Our batting was excellent, but it was probably a couple of crucial missed catches and some lack of concentration in our bowling that tipped the balance.
The statistics are that we won the toss and batted well to allow Hardy to declare after 51 overs on 221 for 6, which was overhauled by Wheathamstead with 3 wickets and 8 balls to spare.
Batting first was important in the context of last week’s poor return of 2 points, and a degree of conservatism was justified. This is a congested division where even though half way up (or down) the table, a team of this quality is perfectly capable of promotion, but the margins will be small.
We got off to a solid start, posting 50 for the first wicket, when Kailash Marjoria joined Giles Mitchell. Both made excellent half centuries, Mitchell solid and excellent off the front foot, and Kailash injecting urgency with clean, hard hitting. While these two were batting we bossed the game, but they were dismissed in quick succession, but good contributions of quick runs from Meeps, Alan Armitage, Hemel Malde and Nick Ingram gave us a good-looking score on an uncertain wicket, and 49 overs to get 10 wickets.
At 100 for 1, going at almost 6 an over, our chances of victory looked bleak. We had opened with Softy and Hardain Nandra, who spun the ball but just didn’t have that bit of luck that was needed, and the new ball, taken skilfully by Ben Lederman and Hemel Malde, yielded little more despite beating the bat.
It was Meeps who came on, bowling with his great experience, to take the second wicket, and thereafter we were in with a chance. Meeps is worth his place in the team as either a batsman or bowler, but fields with the skill of a cardboard Babycham girl.
The uncertain bounce made life difficult for Giles behind the wicket, but he came out with credit after a good catch and very capable stumping. Hardain fielded as well as any first team player and took a brilliant catch, while Kailash covered the ground like a scalded cat. He has worked hard on his fitness, and is now a svelte 14 or so stones, having embarked on a diet of cold baked beans and Fosters at £1.85 at the union bar at Loughborough. Yes, he’s broke, and permanently hungry.
Hardain spun the ball considerably, but had no luck, and Nick Ingram bowled well at the end to take a wicket and give us hope, but the horse had bolted. Jez Menzies chased the ball around like a teenager, and kept our spirits high, but although our ground fielding was good, it was, as ever, missed catching opportunities that lost us 30 points.
But 17 points is better than 2, and this is a side that can win any match.
Hopefully we will be in the top four in September.
