Radlett CC 3rd XI v Potton Town on Sat 04 Sep 2010 at 12.30
Radlett CC Won by 2 wickets

Match report We won the battle but lost the war.
Radlett Thirds performed creditably on Saturday to win in the last over by two wickets. There were good individual performances, but the overweening impression was the determination shown by this side coming back from the opposition being 136 for no wicket, to even compete. And then from 33 for 3 chasing 212 to knuckle down and then win.
This season we have missed having one big bowling or batting presence around which the other players can muster, and that is why we will be playing in division 5 next year. But it can never be said that we laid down, nor that any player did anything but their best.
These resources were cannily husbanded by the experienced Ian Edwards, who never, right to the end, would admit defeat. Without Eddo, who incidentally also was our heaviest run scorer, the game would have been up weeks ago. As it was, it was only other results that conspired to consign us to relegation.
As to the game, Eddo lost the toss and Potton elected to bat. Their father and son opening partnership played very well, although we did drop or miss several very difficult chances. At 136-0 at over four an over it looked like we could be facing 250 or more to win. But the bowling partnership of Hadyn Smith’s spin and Dom Ingram’s medium pace immediately slowed the pace. In fact the next 14 overs brought just 22 runs and 2 wickets.
Neil Lederman took 3 wickets, and Dan Cohen Rob Willis and Ollie Robertson put everything into their bowling for no reward.
And despite the missed catches, the standard of ground fielding ranged from good to spectacular, as it has all season. Tej Malde was to the forefront in the field, and Tony Peck rolled back the years with some staggering fielding. Certainly this aspect of our play has never let us down. And we have been lucky to have a wicket keeper of real class in Colin Warne, without whom we would have been much less competitive. The wicket keeper is always, to me, the most important and influential position on the field.
Thus an achievable target of 212 was set on this good batting wicket. However, when Robin Willis came in to bat the score was 33-3, and defeat opened its ugly jaws. Willis, however, steadied the boat and the threatened to win the game by himself playing some sumptuous shots, but, as he has all season, got out annoyingly when he was well in and batting nicely. When he has got over this barrier, he is going to score a heap of runs.
At 96-4, the match was in the balance, but Hadyn Smith batted superbly from the start, and with Dom Ingram playing the straight man at the other end, the score rose to 150, admittedly against some erratic Potton bowling. Ingram went for a sturdy 41, and a bit later Smith for an excellent 63, but it wasn’t over when Neil Lederman joined Ollie Robertson with 24 still needed from 4 overs and 2 wickets left. These two allayed our fears, batting with gusto and skill, and when Robertson smashed an off drive to the boundary the game was won with 4 balls left.
Our joy, however, only lasted until we heard the other sides’ results.
And although this is disappointing, this is an embryonic side who will grow into a fine side if they stay together. Availability is always an issue, but there is enough talent in this side and below to guarantee a healthy future.
Good luck to you all. Dom Ingram
