Radlett CC 3rd XI v Watton on Stone on Sat 21 Aug 2010 at 1.00
Radlett CC Lost by 9 wickets
Match report
This was truly a sad day for Radlett Thirds. We capitulated in humiliating fashion, and showed that if this is our standard, we do actually deserve to be relegated.
It’s nobody’s fault, but if you haven’t got the bowling to get sides out, let alone partly control the game, then you won’t win games at this level. It can never be said that bowlers don’t try hard enough, they do. We just aren’t good enough. When one looks back to very successful seasons, that success has been led by an opening attack that threatens the batsman.
We lost the toss and made a pedestrian but respectable 188 for 9, with Dom Ingram making 33, and acting captain (poor sod) Robin Willis a good 47. Hemel Malde contributed a spirited 23 at the end to add a little momentum.
It must be said that the wicket did get easier later on, and Watton have two match-winning batsmen. Dan Cohen removed the first one in the first over from a bad shot, and we dropped an easy chance from the second one before he had reached double figures. Thereafter we were treated to a diet of fetching the ball from different parts of the boundary. He went on to get 122 not out, and we did not take any further wickets. They reached the target with 9 wickets and 8 overs to spare.
Not only did we not bowl wicket-taking deliveries, but sprayed the ball both sides of the wicket, and offered a buffet of four-balls on which the batters feasted. 250 would not have been enough.
The fielding was fine, especially given the depressing direction the game was taking. And although we could escape the drop yet, with a win or two, what you’ve got to ask yourself is: “Do you want another season of this?” Do you feel lucky?
