Match report
Radlett 3rd XI v Baldock 14th August 2010
Rain ruined what was turning out to be a well-balanced contest which both sides needed to win. And points are at a premium at the bottom of a division that is congested as Radlett’s service road when the shops are open.
Last week’s rain probably cost us the difference between 19th and 12th positions. Thus despite the miserable conditions, both sides were keen to finish the game.
Baldock won the toss and surprisingly chose to bat. This gave us the better chance of victory given the league rules. These state that the overs subtracted will equal the time lost in minutes GMT minus the combined age of the umpires divided by the number of spark plugs in Tony Johnson’s car.
Having established these incontrovertible truths, Dan Cohen and Neil Lederman charged in as if from the Golan Heights, using the juiciness of the wicket to stifle the batsmen, and it was nearly an hour before runs overtook wickets. Thereafter, however, our bowling and fielding standards drooped, allowing Baldock to reach 148-8 from their 43 overs. Cohen ended with a creditable 3-22, but we really should have done better.
We fancied our chances with 149 to win in 37 overs, but lost two early wickets to a lively opening bowling attack, and after several stoppages, Geoff Bird had no choice but to call a halt with Radlett on 31-2.
It is significant that just two of the Baldock batsmen scored 100 of their 148 runs, showing that once a batsman had played himself thoroughly, batting was much less tricky, and your author would certainly have backed Radlett to win in 37 overs.
So with three games to go we enter the familiar territory of having to fight for survival. It’s worth fighting for.
