We lost today, weakly submitting the initiative at the end. And although we were not the better side, it was a painful defeat to the bottom team in the division.
This was a game we needed to win, but didn’t deserve to.
We batted badly, bowled badly, and dropped catches. Yet we were in with a chance into the last hour.
We won the toss and batted. Our innings came in three phases. The first 19 overs produced 98 runs, and the final 15 overs yielded 87. But the middle bit included 38 runless deliveries. Our final total was 219-7, thanks to an excellent 62 from the youthful but massively promising Tej Malde, who played beautifully and Andre Sharma who made a cultured 30. At 110 for 1 we were considering when we could declare. But it all went turgidly dry, and the resultant pressure to score runs conceded wickets. But the admirable Zed Gitay, supported by Shameel Ahmed who was ugly but effective, both scored 40s to bring us to a winnable score.
We reduced Chipperfield to 46 for 3, and had delusions of victory, but we were never in charge, we never had control, and that was the difference. Chipperfield took advantage of our wayward bowling, and for the second time in a fortnight one batter took the game away from us. The fielding deteriorated, catches were spilled, and we left the field feeling very dejected.
Yet the net result was 16 points and one place higher in the league.
I don’t think we will get relegated, but after today I really wonder if we deserve to stay up.
