Match report
Radlett 3rd XI v Metropolitan Police 17th July 2010
Our fourth draw in a row, this time we avoided defeat because we had enough control to stop the Met Police winning. The Met Police are contending seriously for promotion, and in reality if it were not for an excellent innings from their captain, they would not have come remotely close.
But despite all that, the reality is that we are left teetering just above the drop zone in division 4. Again.
We lost the toss and were put in to bat, which was fine. After an early wicket, Dom Ingram and Lloyd Paternott looked secure and took the score to 56 for 1 at over three an over, but a flurry of wickets took the score to 90 for 6, and an embarrassingly early finish looked likely.
The innings was saved by a belligerent 43 from Rob Willis, then Zahur Gitay smashed 35 not out, well supported by a mature 15 from Josh Charles, which took the score to an acceptable 172 for 9 from our 53 overs, and a chance to win.
Brandon Lewis and Z Gitay bowled with venom and wobble respectively, and at 22-3 after 15 excellent overs, we were well on top. We did drop a couple of catches, which would come back to haunt us. From then on we gradually became second best despite some really brilliant outfielding, which effectively saved us the match. Robin Willis was just outstanding in the field, and the younger players, Lewis Jenkins, Shamit Nathwani, Hardain Nandhra, Shameel Ahmed and Lloyd Paternott, all gave everything, and we looked as sharp in the field as I have ever seen a 3rd XI.
Rob Willis had a bowl without any luck, and Shamit took a couple of expensive wickets to force a tense finish, and Brandon came back on and was both dangerous and difficult to get away, thus we gained the draw. Met Police finished on 171 for 7.
It is galling to think that, having bowled well, and fielded superbly, a couple of dropped catches and lapses of batting concentration cost us a win that we desperately need.
None of the sides we have played in this division have outclassed us, and we do not deserve to be relegated. But the harsh truth is that we will unless we impose ourselves and force a win. It’s easy to get demoted but tough to get promoted.
