Dunstable ll v Radlett CC 3rd XI on Sat 10 Jul 2010 at 1.00

Match report There are times when I despair of the points system in this league and the sometimes negative cricket that this produces. Saturday’s result at Dunstable is one of those days.

I would firstly like to say that if we get 14 points each week we will not go down but I am left feeling slightly disappointed at the manner of the 14 points.

On a blisteringly hot day, with skipper Iain Edwards, getting drunk under the Prague skies, Robin Willis was asked to skipper a young (plus Dom and TP) Radlett III’s side. Robin went and LOST the toss meaning 3 hours in the field with the sun smashing down on the players.

Daniel Cohen and Brandon Lewis opened up with Brandon bowling quickly and sometimes wayward but always dangerous and Daniel settling into a nice rhythm and being economical but they both had little luck. In the 3rd over a hugely disappointing not out was given after the Dunstable skipper broke the cover off the ball which Josh Charles snaffled from Dan and umpire Dave Marsden looked down from his 6 feet 8 inch perch and saved his skipper. Boocock and young Custance then batted well and looked circumspect against Brandon and Dan and also against Robin.

Dunstable’s patience was commendable but the cricket was dire as over after over ticked by with one or two runs. Shameel had replaced Dan and Shamit replaced Robin and thus the wickets started to fall on the Dunstable Road! Shamit made the breakthrough and one over later Shameel joined him, thanks to a fantastic stumping from Josh Charles, which he later dedicated to his Grandad, who die that night. 2 wickets down and the big hitter in, and he plays straight! Every Dunstable batsman in the top 5 got a start but only first teamer Terry Carr, who works in Cambridge and couldn’t play in a first team game at Harpenden!!! Got more than 50 as Radlett’s fielding was tight without being brilliant. Indeed we probably gave Dunstable 15/20 runs by not being as good as we can be.

We dropped 3 or four catches, one Brandon will think he should have done better and one which Tej did not make quick enough ground to. Neel took two smart catches. At 180-4 with 8 overs to go, Dunstable then became even more negative and ground out 28 runs to use their 53 overs. Further wickets for Brandon and Shamit who finished with 3-71. I felt they should have declared after 51 overs at 200 and made Radlett go for the win, thinking that they could also win. This was a very gettable total on an absolute belter of a track.

A fantastic tea was enjoyed by 11 players, Birdy, Tee Cee, Ketan and Robs Dad. There was still some left. We opened with Tej and Dom, but Tej could not get going in his normal fluid manner and struggled to 8 before he was shot out by the long arm of umpire Marsden. Dom started to cut loose and Neel played himself in as he does. Dom made a good 31 and Neel a fabulous 45. When Dom was out Hardain came in and started to push the pace, and ran superbly with Neel and hit the bad balls. At 30 overs we are looking just slight favourites, but Dunstable bring back Alan Carr, all 48 years of him and his nagging length and close down the field. Neel and Hardain got out trying to up the pace and Robin was absolutely belligerent in his 32. All the time Dunstable’s field was not giving anything away.

Shamit with some good hitting and TP saw we ended up 189-5 but should have got 30 points.

Points to ponder:

1. We must be sharper in the field, and be on our toes at all times.
2. We must think about where we are when we are fielding to stop twos and cut down angles.
3. We must look to rotate the strike during the horrible middle overs when the attack is negative.
4. We must not think 14 points is good when we could have had 30, although it is better than 10!
5. Daniel and Brandon will soon have some luck and bowl a side out between them for 75.
6. Hardain looks a natural batsman in the 3’s, Neel is the lynchpin round who we should revolve, Josh Charles had his best game for a while and looks like he has turned the corner
7. Add skipper Edo to the mix and the exciting youngsters can help the older players produce a great end of season for the III’s .
8. The mix of young players and the older heads is good but I question why there is never a drop out from the II's during the season. the youngsters coming through forming the next generation is great but we need to keep hold of all good players.

Overall a feeling of disappointment and if anyone can think of a better scoring system or over system then speak to TJ.

MOM A difficult one but probably Shamel Ahmed (sorry Neel)
TFC Again difficult but TP
