Match report
God invented cricket. And he (or is it she?) intended it to be played on days like today – hot and dry with a bar not too far away. But the game itself was a bit muted and hardly divine.
It ended, inevitably, a draw, with neither side having the confidence to grasp the initiative, and though Sawbridgeworth had the better of this draw, which was reflected in the points awarded, they didn’t deserve to win. Neither did we deserve to lose, which is small compensation for a meagre return of seven points.
Sawbridgeworth won the toss, and like us, not wishing to spend three hours running around in the heat, chose to bat.
Brandon Lewis bowled as quickly as anybody we have seen in this division, and took an early wicket, as did his fellow opening bowler Dan Cohen. Dan bowled excellently in patches, but still bowls clusters of poor deliveries, which takes off the pressure he has built. But he is young and improving and will soon be a fine medium fast bowler. Brandon is younger and has the potential to be devastating.
However we dropped two chances at this stage, which would have put them 40 for 4, instead of which they put on the best part of 100 for the 3rd wicket. Yet our bowling and outfielding was good enough to keep the batsmen reined in. Shameel Ahmed bowled his spin skilfully to take 2 for 46 from 17 consecutive overs, supported by Shamit Nathwani and Robin Willis.
Sawbridgeworth reached 191 for only 5 wickets after their full 53 overs, a decent performance in the field on a hot day on a reasonably true wicket. We felt well in with a chance, and thought that the opposition had not made the most of their opportunity.
But after an hour we had lost our top three batsmen for 40, and effectively we played catch-up but never caught up. Ian Edwards, Rob Willis and Shameel Ahmed made 20s and 30s, and Tony Peck made an unbeaten 23, never looking troubled.
We ended up 50 runs short with 7 wickets down, but really we made a poor fist of it, and needed a big solid innings to bat around, but it was not forthcoming.
This puts us in the bottom third of the league and a gap appearing above us. Not the abyss, but certainly the downslope of a valley. We want a couple of wins or it will be an uphill struggle.
