Radlett CC 3rd XI v Clifton on Sat 26 Jun 2010 at 1.00

Match report
Radlett won the toss and elected to bat against a Clifton side that started the day bottom of the division.
For once, Radlett managed to get off to the solid start that in recent weeks they have been desperately craving, courtesy of the opening partnership of Neel Malde and Shamit Nathwani. The innings was however dominated by a truly superb innings from Neel, he paced his knock expertly, circumspect to begin with and by the end he looked like he could hit every ball he faced to the boundary. Neel was well supported by Shamit as they added 64 for the first wicket and he was further assisted by a fluently played 33 from Kailash Morjaria as they added 80 for the second wicket. When the captain joined Neel, he was very much in full flow and dominated their stand of 93. Neel played shots to all parts but in particular his on and off driving were played with exquisite timing, a joy to watch. Radlett had the luxury of declaring after 50 overs with 243 on the board.
Clifton came out all guns blazing, determined to take the attack to the home side's bowlers. Radlett did however have two early breakthroughs as Brandon Lewis and Daniel Cohen took it in turn to each clean bowl their openers. Runs were however coming at a pace, so it came as a relief when Shameel took an outstanding caught and bowled chance and then quickly followed this up by bowling their number four who was at that stage in overdrive. The best was yet to come as Kailash took an absolute blinder at full pace on the deep long on boundary and this was followed by two further excellent catches in the deep, firstly from Brandon and again Kailash. At seven wickets down it was advantage Radlett. To their credit Clifton did not lie down, so in front of an expanding crowd a grandstand finish was a distinct possibility. Unfortunately, we crucially missed three or four opportunities (I think all off Shameel) which this side would expect to take and suddenly time and runs were running out for Radlett to secure victory. Given their 'lives', the eighth wicket stand prospered and it took a Shameel run out to swing the tie back Radlett's way. However the ninth wicket, was only claimed on the penultimate ball of the innings, a nasty spiralling skier to Robin Willis and thus a draw resulted.
An entertaining game but one where the old addage 'catches win matches' rang soundly in the ears of the Radlett players. Well done Neel, there can't have been too many better knocks seen on the bottom ground at Radlett, and positively, 19 points is a decent return from a game you don't end up winning.
