Radlett CC 3rd XI v Wheathampstead on Sat 19 Jun 2010 at 1.00

Match report Radlett missed an excellent opportunity on Saturday to post back to back wins, against a team that surprisingly sits top of the league.

Wheathampstead called correctly and decided to bat first on a well worn wicket. Radlett’s bowlers continued where they left off from last Saturday as batting proved difficult from ball one. Wheathampstead were never given the chance to get away as disciplined bowling was the order of the day. Remarkably five of their top six failed to reach double figures, three of whom registered ducks, although their number three, their ‘player’ (he opened the bowling too) compiled a measured and ultimately match winning century. Wheathampstead managed to do something that we have thus far failed to achieve this season and kept wickets in hand which allowed them to post 180 when 160 looked a more realistic prospect at three quarter time. Brandon Lewis was again superb, his added pace has introduced potency to the Radlett attack and the other bowlers seem to be feeding off it. Daniel Cohen and Zed Gitay again bowled well and Robin Willis put in his best performance with the ball this season bowling an unchanged spell of 14 overs. The fielding was professional, all eight chances offered were taken, Colin Warne picked up five behind the stumps and their were three further excellent catches from Tony Johnson, a gem at short fine leg, a rocket caught and bowled from Zed and a decent pouch down at deep long off by Shameel Ahmed.

Unfortunately, from here on in it was a tale of woe, with 7 runs on the board Radlett found themselves with three batsman back in the changing rooms. Iain Edwards and Robin set about a mini revival but when they both fell in quick succession and Shameel and Zed soon followed, Radlett were back in the mire and very much out of the game at 60-7. It was left to Tony Peck, Colin and Brandon to salvage some pride and Tony and Brandon showed the rest of the team what was required adding an unbeaten half century partnership without undue alarm.

The batting was desperately disappointing, currently no one in this side is showing the necessary technique or will power to overcome the accurate and economical bowling that we are facing in this division. Our last four innings have been 117, 130, 123 & this week’s 134, which at this level is simply not good enough. It is however not all doom and gloom because the talent, if not the current application, is there (somewhere!), and based on the last couple of weeks our bowling is producing the goods. We are precariously hovering above the relegation places so action is needed immediately.
