Match report
Radlett 3rd XI v Ampthill (away) 29th May 2010
At this stage of the season Radlett 3rds are usually bottom of the table. They aren’t, but looking at today’s performance, you can see why.
We were saved by rain and salvaged ten points from an unresolved match that we would have lost given just another hour’s play.
We were put in to bat, and managed to survive barely 40 overs, amounting a paltry 117 on a wicket that was faultless. The only ray of light was from our youngest player Tej (short for Todger) Maldi. He made a stylish 40, and when he was out we imploded from 71 for 3 to 117 all out.
Ampthill batted in and out of the rain, and looked very secure, though bowling was a difficult business with the greasy, slippery ball, but we looked completely out of the game until our prayers for rain were answered and we blessed the cumulonimbus for its sacred children that bring green grass and ten undeserved points for us.
This was not a weak 3rd XI side, and skipper Edwards was right to warn the side that it strove hard to reach this division, and will have to work hard every game to survive and prosper at this level.
Positive aspects at this stage of the season are the batting form of Teddy Edwards and Tony Johnson, who are both finding runs quickly and easily. And although we are probably a quick bowler short, we have good wicket keeping and spin bowling options, and the fielding is a good standard, with Ben Thornhill outstanding. The “vibe” is also excellent, with a good mix of youth and experience, and a good sense of enjoyment and selflessness, with no prima donnas. Much of this is due to Edwards’ example and general good sense and even-handedness. Although the captaincy is often a poisoned chalice, I feel Eddo will look back on these as the good days.
It is a pleasure to play cricket with these blokes, but as Yoda says: “up our game we must”.
