Radlett CC Won by 31 runs
Match report
Radlett 3rd X1 v Cockfosters (Away) 15th May ‘10
Firstly I must apologise for a mistake made in last week’s report referring to our well-loved scorer Mr Tony Cohen. In it, Tony was described as “the fittest man in Radlett”. This was an obvious typographical error.
We won the toss, and in deference to our early lack of confidence, decided to bat first. The team made exactly 200 in the 53 overs, for the loss of nine wickets. And yes it was a good team performance, with not a single 50, but many good contributions. But one wondered if it would be enough, especially remembering how last year we posted 250 plus, and Cockfosters still won comfortably.
Anish Patel and Shamit Nathwani made entertaining and quick runs without threatening real permanence. Rob Willis was immediately belligerent when he joined captain Iain Edwards, who continued his form of last week, but in more measured style, but Willis fell to a loose shot.
This brought in Prabs Armabeliever, who continued the tempo set by Willis, but was perhaps unlucky to be given out lbw on 40, and just when we looked like taking command. But even when Edwards went, after another worthy innings, the work was continued with a spirited and inventive 33 from Tony Johnson, and skilful contributions from Zahur Gitay, the “Crafty Beaver” and the talented Shameel Armhead.
Daniel Cohen also batted.
During the tea break we pondered whether 200 would be enough, and on asking one of the Cockfosters players the etymological roots of the town name “Cockfosters” he tantalisingly said “Well you can get a pint of Fosters”. I suppose we’ll never know.
After losing their first wicket to an inexplicable run out, Cockfosters simply breezed along, reaching 100 with no further loss in the 19th over. Thus with less than 100 to win in 28 overs with 9 wickets remaining, the game looked over, more especially remembering our lack of firepower last week, when we failed to bowl out a much less powerful side having reduced them to 37-5.
But bowl them we out we did, well I say bowl, but there were a further two run outs, one a brilliant effort from Z Gitay. There were also 3 wickets for the excellent Shamit Nathwani, whose name contains many amusing anagrams – (there will be a competition next week for the best, in both clean and dirty sections), and another 4 wickets for Prabs Armanalien (an illegal alien).
Cockfosters were thus bowled out for 169 with 5 overs to spare. Eddo
Edwards and his team must be congratulated for their mental stamina when really up against it. Again the fielding was of a high standard, and Dan Cohen, Z Gitay and more especially Rob Willis bowled well without reward.
Tony Johnson, kept wicket tidily until he received a nasty bounce and was hit in the nose, losing a lot of blood, and ending up in Chase Farm hospital, where the ball was retrieved via the oesophagus and colon, and once it was cleaned up, the ball was luckily as good as new, so no harm done after all.
Seriously, I spoke to Tony this morning, and he is sore but well, and tough enough to look forward to playing next Saturday. If this man is on drugs, I want some!
Shameel took over the keeping duties with some aplomb, and luckily we could do without his bowling talents as the twin twirlers Prabs, 4-48 and Shamit, 3-31 spun us to victory.
A marvellous win, and a rare one thus early in the season. And massive congratulations to the club, as I understand that all five league sides won their games. The standards just keep improving. At this rate, Middlesex will be playing at Radlett next season!
