Match report Edo's report

Radlett won the coin toss, and what in hindsight probably proved to be the wrong decision, gave Hertford first use of a pitch that was batsman friendly and an outfield that was surprisingly slick for a season opening game. The Radlett bowling failed to make any significant impression on a strong Hertford top order and runs flowed freely. Three of Hertford’s top four batsman registered half centuries and their skipper had the luxury of calling time after 51 overs and 253 on the board. Haydn Smith had been the pick of the bowlers with 2-61. Had we taken all of our opportunities we may have been set a target nearer 200. As it was, despite the descending gloom, the predicted rain was showing no sign of arriving, so victory was still a realistic possibility.
However, a flurry of early wickets meant that at 38-4 we were very much on the backfoot. Debutant, Fraser Crawford, had looked impressive at the crease before offering a well taken catch at mid off from a firmly struck cover drive. Haydn Smith then joined Matt Soffair and their aggressive counterattacking partnership brought Radlett right back into the game, both bludgeoned the ball to all parts and with the run rate reducing to close on 5 an over the tide was turning back towards the visitors. Sadly, in the over after the drinks break, their partnership of 89 was broken when Haydn holed out to deep long on for a more than a run a ball 46. Thereafter the lower order were unable to offer Matt decent support and the chase quickly lost momentum. Matt eventually perished for an impressive eye catching 58 full of quality strokes. Hertford had out played us in all aspects of the game and thus deservedly claimed the 30 points. For Radlett, it was all disappointment and a journey home with a mere 3 points. Overall, a bad day at the office.

Captain Iain Edwards troops were emphatically beaten by Hertford 11 on Saturday.

Put into bat , Hertford got off to a confident start with Tom Bancroft striking the ball well in a run-a-ball 32. Graeme Riddle and Steve Benford added a 104 run partnership with Benford. The pair were only briefly subdued by the introduction of Haydn Smith’s spin into the attack. Radlett had only themselves to blame with some abysmal drops in the field. Catches have to be taken and these were not hard.

Dan Cohen returned for his second spell, Benford launched into him smiting him for a two and two fours before Cohen had the last laugh bowling him off the last ball of the over. Graeme Riddle followed soon afterwards, caught off Smith

He may have considered himself unlucky as Radlett had grassed two easy chances, one of each batsmen, earlier in the partnership. This brought together Will Ray and George Pavey. The latter took his time to settle in but when he did he started to play some attractive shots. Meanwhile Ray was playing an intelligent innings, picking off the loose and sometimes not so loose bowling as he led an accelerating scoring rate towards 250. Just before reaching that objective Pavey was caught but there was time for Darren Benford to emulate his brother in style and shot selection. When Ray reached his 50 and the total climbed to 253, Benford declared. This left Hertford 49 overs to bowl Radlett out.

5 an over on a good track was an ask that Radlett could have achieved with some sensible batting, especially with a good looking line up.

Dave Robinson departed in the 2nd over playing an expansive drive and Colin Warne soon after to a nothing shot. Lloyd Paternott was then joned by Fraser Crawford and Fraser's first ball disappeared to the boundary. He looks a really useful addition. However just as the 2 young lions were building the innings back, they both fell within two balls of each other. This brought Matt Soffair and Haydn Smith to the wicket who then set about repairing the damage.

They attacked the bowling, Smith twice took 12 off an Andy Brazill over and Soffair hit Alex Cooper out of the attack. While these two were together Radlett had hopes of mounting a serious challenge, scoring rate was not a problem. Adam Carlson replaced Cooper and his first ball, a rank long hop, sailed over the boundary.

Drinks break came with Radlett looking good, with Matt and Haydn having added 89 but Haydn managed to find a fielder and not the road and that was pretty much it as Iain played back to a quicker arm ball from Brazill and Zeddy, well the less said the better. Hemel was also done by a quicker ball and the end was nigh, despite Daniel hitting a lovely 4 from his first ball.

Benford brought Bancroft back at the end and he duly obliged by inducing Ben Charles to nick one into the safe hands of Graeme Riddle at slip to finish with 4-24.

Work to be done as the positive cricket of last year's run in was forgotten and the team meekly surrendered.

I have said it before and I will say it again, it is no good just turning up each Saturday, sometimes late, sometimes a few minutes before the game starts and expect to play good cricket. Training is available on Tuesdays and in order to improve people need to train. Catches need to be taken, Sorry Matt but I had already written c Soffair in the book. We need to ensure that we are positive and work hard to ensure that the season is NOT a struggle.

Come on boys support Edo and improve each week.
