Radlett CC 2nd XI v Hoddesdon on Sat 28 Aug 2010 at 1.00
Match was Abandoned due to rain
Match report
The weather at the start of this match was mild, though cool in the shade. A light breeze blew small clouds slowly across the sun, although the cloud density and the wind speed increased gradually during the course of the match. As a result of considerable rain during the preceding week, the pitch originally earmarked for the match was too wet to be prepared, despite the use of covers, and so it could not be used. Another strip, previously used and repaired, with dry ends and a dryish middle, was called into use. The residual grass on the pitch was green, even after its final close cut. Nick Fielden won the toss, and asked HCC to bat first.
Deon Carolus and Stuart Browne opened the RCC attack, with Lee Fortis replacing Stuart for over 14, and Stuart changing to Deon's (north) end at the start of over 17. With the ball moving off the pitch rather more than usual for a Radlett strip, HCC's openers had made a careful start, registering a mixture of mainly dot balls, with fours and singles in roughly equal numbers. Lee got the first wicket in over 18, bowling HCC's No. 1, who made a useful 39. Stuart began to take wickets fairly regularly from his new end, with only HCC's No. 2, Matt Byrne, providing consistent resistance. HCC's batsmen offered a number of sharp chances during this phase, two of them being well caught by Rob Smith (slip) and Matt Soffair (short leg).
John Barr, bowling slow left-arm, replaced Lee at over 32. Byrne took the opportunity to improve HCC's scoring rate, so Deon was recalled for over 34. Byrne continued to look for quick runs, but Deon's speed and Stuart's accuracy made this more difficult. In due course, Byrne ran out of partners, finishing with a solid 87 not out in an HCC total of 178 – 10 from 51.2 overs. Stuart's haul of 7 – 74 from 24 overs, including a third catch, by Lee Fortis at short leg, was very commendable. Allowing for a drinks interval and time spent looking for a lost ball, the HCC innings lasted for about 186 minutes. This was mainly because RCC had used bowlers with long run-ups almost exclusively, bowling only one over of spin in the whole innings, and because of the time taken during the changeovers between outgoing and incoming batsmen at the fall of each wicket.
The fall of wickets was: 1- 59 (No 1), 2 – 64 (3), 3 – 80 (4), 4 – 96 (5), 5 – 126 (6), 6 - 142 (7), 7 – 159 (8), 8 – 161 (9), 9 – 165 (10), 10 – 178 (11). Runs and wickets at the end of various overs were: (23 0 5), (31 0 10), (51 0 15), (69 2 20), (89 3 25), (107 4 30), (128 5 35), (131 5 40), (159 7 45), (172 9 50), (178 10 51.2). Extras were W 1, NB 0, B 15, LB 2.
During the tea interval, the umpires explained that, allowing for lost time, RCC had only bowled 51 overs by the end of 3 hours, instead of the 53 overs required by the League's Match Rule 1c). As a result, HCC's tenth wicket, which fell during over 52, could not count towards RCC's bonus bowling points. Since RCC had chosen to field first on winning the toss, the first five HCC wickets did not count when calculating RCC's bowling bonus points. RCC thus received 5 – 1 = 4 bowling bonus points, and HCC got 2 x 3 = 6 batting bonus points. A separate consequence of Match Rule 1c) was that HCC were offered the choice of bowling either 100 – 52 = 48 overs or 51 – 6 = 45 overs at RCC's batsmen. HCC chose to bowl 48 overs, setting RCC a run rate target of just over 3.7 runs/over for victory.
Under increasing cloud cover, Matt Soffair and Lewis Jenkins began RCC's innings briskly, taking the score to 45 before Lewis was caught off the last ball of over 11. John Barr had faced only four balls before a heavy rain shower began during over 13. The covers were wheeled over the pitch, and play was held up for 13 minutes. The League Match Rules prescribe a reduction of one over in the duration of the second innings for every complete 3.5 minutes of playing time lost. The maximum length of the RCC innings was thus reduced to 45 overs, with 133 runs still needed from 32 overs and 3 balls. This increased the required run rate for the rest of the innings to 4.1 runs/over.
In over 19, John Barr hit a high drive over the head of HCC's long off fielder, Jamie Curtis. Undaunted, Curtis turned, and sprinted towards the boundary, turning his head to watch the ball as he ran. Still running with his back to the ball, he took a brilliant over-the-shoulder catch a few yards inside the boundary. John had scored 28 from 27 balls, and RCC were 90 - 2. With the RCC score on 105 – 3, rain began to fall again after one ball of over 23. A ground sheet was placed over the pitch, but when it was removed after the rain had stopped, standing water could be seen on the ends of the pitch. The match did not restart, being abandoned after about 45 minutes of play had been lost in total.
The fall of wickets was: 1- 45 (No 2), 2 – 90 (3), 3 – 90 (4). Runs and wickets at the end of various overs were: (13 0 5), (44 0 10), (68 1 15), (91 3 20), (105 3 22.1). Extras were W 2, NB 1, B 5, LB 1. Each side received 10 league points for the abandoned match. It is interesting to note that RCC 4th XI were able to complete their home match against Boxmoor CC on the second ground by resuming play after each shower of rain had ended.
