Hertford v Radlett CC 2nd XI on Sat 21 Aug 2010 at 1.00
Radlett CC Lost by ten wickets
Match report
The sky was completely overcast at the start of the warm, humid afternoon for this match. A blustery wind blew intermittently. The pitch, which had been used for a high-scoring HCCC v Bucks CCC match a few days previously, was dry and brown with short cut grass. It looked good for a lot more runs. The outfield was generally green, though with a few bare patches. Nick Fielden won the toss, and decided to bat first.
Lewis Jenkins and Nick opened the RCC innings. Lewis took a single from the first ball, but Nick was bowled by James Mead's third delivery, the ball just clipping the top of the stumps. John Barr at No 3 scored a two from his first ball and departed LBW to his second. The over ended without further incident, but Lewis was caught at the wicket from a nick off the fifth ball of HCC's second over, leaving RCC's score at 3 – 3.
Fraser Crawford and Gwilym Jones then began the best partnership of the innings, with Fraser playing his usual wide range of shots while Gwilym defended stoutly. Fraser reached an excellent 50 in over 17. It was composed of 11 fours, one 3, one two and one single, and things looked a little healthier. Unfortunately, Fraser fell to a catch at the wicket from HCC's Rob Slater's next delivery, and RCC's recovery paused. David Robinson played himself in cautiously, but Slater bowled Gwilym and Hardain Nandhra with successive balls in over 21. At 62 – 6, with a potential hat-trick on the cards, gloom returned. Slater's first ball to Lee Fortis was a wide, so the chance of a hat-trick was lost.
HCC's Chris Dew took a good, low catch at backward square leg from David Robinson's leg glance. RCC's tail resisted effectively, with HCC trying a total of seven bowlers before the innings ended during over 44 at 134 - 10. Lee, Shameel Ahmed and Ben Charles each batted solidly, all reaching double figures, but the damage had been done much earlier in the innings. HCC's opening bowlers had begun RCC's demolition, and their change bowlers had maintained the pressure very well.
The fall of wickets was: 1 - 1 (No 2), 2 – 3 (3), 3 – 3 (1), 4 – 61 (4), 5 – 62 (5), 6 - 62 (7), 7 – 88 (6), 8 – 99 (8), 9 – 111 (10), 10 – 134 (11). Runs and wickets at the end of various overs were: (16 3 5), (33 3 10), (53 3 15), (62 4 20), (76 6 25), (89 7 30), (111 9 35), (122 9 40), (134 10 43.2). Extras were W 1, NB 0, B 1, LB 1. RCC received no bonus batting points, and HCC got 10 bowling bonus points. Drizzle had fallen for a short time during the RCC innings, wetting the outfield somewhat and making the ball slippery, but not heavily enough to stop play. HCC opted to use the nine overs unused by the RCC innings to increase the maximum length of their own innings to 56 overs.
In the event, the additional overs were quite unnecessary. HCC's opening batsmen set about the RCC bowling as if time was short, the over allocation was small, and rain was about to fall heavily. They reached 138 – 0 in 20.3 overs, an overall scoring rate of better than 6 runs per over, and they scored faster than that for much of the innings. The pitch did not cause them any problems. In general, the RCC bowling seemed to be of poor length and direction, Lee Fortis bowling the only maiden of the innings. The HCC batsmen offered a couple of hard catches which brushed fingertips or did not stick, but otherwise they were not in trouble. RCC's ground fielding was tidy, but, as Dominic has already remarked of a different match, most of the activity consisted of retrieving the ball from the boundary.
Runs and wickets at the end of various overs were: (31 0 5), (65 0 10), (82 0 15), (133 0 20), (138 0 20.3). Extras were W 0, NB 1, B 0, LB 0. HCC received 30 points for their crushing win, while RCC failed to register any points at all from the entire match.
