Radlett CC 2nd XI v Totteridge Milhillians on Sat 14 Aug 2010 at 1.00 p.m.
Match was Abandoned due to rain
Match report
During the morning of this match, light rain had fallen steadily between about 08:30 and 10:30 hr, and more heavily from about 12:20 to 12:35 hr. The outfield was, surprisingly, not too damp. When the covers were rolled away from the pitch, it appeared rather green, although the grass had been cut short. A small trickle of water had leaked through the join between the covers and the groundsheet protecting the upper part of the square. The water had run across the pitch at about its mid-point, safely away from a good length in either direction.
In Nick Fielden's absence, Stuart Browne won the toss for RCC, and chose to field first. The match began about 10 minutes after the expected start time because of the slight delay in preparations caused by the earlier rain. Despite this, no change from the full 53/47 overs match was planned. Deon Carolus had finished the match against TMCC earlier in the season by taking TMCC's last two wickets in successive balls. He therefore had the chance of a hat-trick from the first ball of this new match. Disappointingly, it was played defensively and safely by bat and front pad, and the world went on. Stuart Browne bowled at the other end, and was rewarded by a catch by Matt Bell, fielding at short leg, in his second over.
Rain began to fall heavily during over 8 and the batsmen and umpires left the scene while the RCC players dragged one groundsheet over their pitch, and a second groundsheet over the pitch for the cup game on 15.8.2010. Although the rain varied in intensity from heavy to light, even stopping from time to time, no further play was deemed possible. With an outfield which had become distinctly wetter, the match was abandoned at about 14:48 hr. This was about half an hour before the deadline which would have been imposed by the league's requirement that the first innings of a match should be at least 40 overs long, assuming no declaration or batting collapse. Meanwhile, in that other part of the forest which lies on the south side of the hedge, play between RCC 3rd XI and Baldock CC 1st XI continued between the showers.
There were no extras during the truncated TMCC innings. Both RCC and TMCC received 10 points for the abandoned match.
