Radlett CC 2nd XI v Langleybury on Sat 31 Jul 2010 at 1.00
Radlett CC Won by three wickets

Match report The weather for this match was warm and humid, with lots of cloud and intermittent sun. A light breeze blew from the pavilion to the pitch. The pitch chosen for the match had been used a couple of months previously, but it had recovered, and was effectively in mint condition. Its grass was cut short, with some green life visible at ground level. The outfield was dry and fast. Nick Fielden won the toss, and asked LCC to bat first. This would allow RCC to finesse their scoring rate in the second innings at the cost of an allocation of only 47 overs instead of 53 overs for the RCC innings, and forfeiting bonus points if the match should be drawn or lost. (The League points system penalises a side which chooses to field first after winning the toss. In this case, the side fielding first can receive a maximum of 5 bonus bowling points for taking wickets six to ten, and it can receive a maximum of 5 bonus batting points for reaching 200 runs.)

In the event, RCC found wickets quite hard to come by, with LCC scoring steadily while losing a wicket from time to time. Of the seven wickets which RCC took, one was an LBW decision, while the other six were due to catches by the RCC fielders. In particular, David Robinson at gully dismissed LCC's No. 1 by stooping forward to take a very good, quick catch just above the ground. This was the first of Deon Carolus' three wickets. Earl Lee scored a competent 50 for LCC. Their final score of 186 – 7 after 53 overs was quite respectable, but was thought to be within reach of RCC's ability.

The fall of wickets was: 1- 30 (No 1), 2 – 44 (3), 3 – 90 (4), 4 – 102 (2), 5 – 113 (5), 6 - 130 (6), 7 – 160 (8). Runs and wickets at the end of various overs were: (20 0 5), (35 1 10), (49 2 15), (63 2 20), (90 3 25), (112 4 30), (119 5 35), (134 6 40), (141 6 45), (175 7 50), (186 7 53). Extras were W 2, NB 6, B 4, LB 5. LCC received 2 x 4 = 8 bonus batting points for reaching 186, and RCC got 7 – 5 = 2 bowling bonus points.

Lewis Jenkins and Nick Fielden opened RCC's innings, but Lewis was given out LBW in over 5. John Barr took his place, attacking the LCC bowling from the start. He was dropped in the slips in over 15 with his personal score at 38 from 35 balls. The pace of the ball took it behind the slips, allowing John to take advantage of the drop by running the second single of his innings. John's partnership with Nick added 68 runs in 42 minutes before Nick was bowled for a useful 34. Fraser Crawford stayed while John reached a sparkling 50 off 50 balls with a straight drive for six into the south hedge during over 20. The match ball could not be found in the depths of the hedge, so a spare ball was introduced. For some reason, the scoring rate then fell noticeably.

Graham Dill kept John company as the score rose to 159 – 3 at the end of over 36, but John became the third of LCC's LBW victims in the next over. His excellent 94 had been made in 113 minutes from only 92 balls, and included 10 fours and 5 sixes. David Robinson kept things moving by scoring two boundaries from the first two balls of his innings, but more drama was on the way. With the score at 173 – 4, and an RCC victory 14 runs away, Graham was caught for a rather subdued 19. Nish Selvakumar was caught at the wicket off the next ball. These two wickets cheered up LCC considerably. Haydn Smith defended the hat-trick ball effectively, and went on to contribute six valuable runs to the total before driving a delivery from Ross Channer upward instead of forward. The batsmen had time to cross before the ball came back to earth, but Ross was waiting underneath, and Haydn was caught and bowled. With five runs needed, and three wickets and five overs remaining, any result was still possible. To RCC's relief, Deon Carolus and David Robinson carefully eased the ship home with three wickets still intact and 2.5 overs unused.

The fall of wickets was: 1- 15 (No 1), 2 – 83 (2), 3 – 103 (4), 4 – 160 (3), 5 – 173 (5), 6 - 173 (7), 7 – 182 (8). Runs and wickets at the end of various overs were: (18 1 5), (50 1 10), (69 1 15), (101 2 20), (107 3 25), (130 3 30), (157 3 35), (177 6 40), (187 7 44.1). Extras were W 1, NB 1, B 0, LB 3. The win justified Nick Fielden's decision to field first, RCC receiving 30 points for their win, and LCC obtaining seven bonus bowling points to add to their eight batting bonus points. Given that neither side managed to bowl the other out in the 53/47 overs available, the match might well have ended in a draw if RCC had batted first.
