Old Finchleians v Radlett CC 2nd XI on Sat 10 Jul 2010 at 1.00
Radlett CC Lost by three wickets
Match report
The weather for this match was sunny and very hot, cooled somewhat by small clouds and a strong breeze blowing across the square. Despite mid-week watering, the pitch was straw coloured and cut short. Despite the long drought, the outfield was uniformly green, in contrast to the patchy desert conditions seen on some other grounds recently. This was ascribed to OFCC's automatic crawling outfield watering system. It looked so good that every home should have one.
OFCC's pitches run roughly north-east to south-west. The ground has a high point at its north-eastern end, but then slopes progressively down towards the pitch, reducing in angle close to the first set of stumps. The slight downhill slope continues from one wicket to the other, then on, at about the same angle, towards the south-western boundary. The Dollis Brook and Folly Brook run outside the ground along its eastern and southern edges.
Before the match began, the teams, umpires and scorers observed a minute's silence in honour of Jim Linegar, the Herts Cricket League's Honorary Treasurer, who died on 8 July 2010. Jim was also Hon. Treasurer of the Home Counties Premier League and of Bishops Stortford CC.
Nick Fielden won the toss, and chose to bat first, and Matt Soffair and he opened the innings. Matt's knock included a six hit out of the ground, over a high fence. The ball was eventually located floating damply in the Dollis Brook. The pair reached 50 without loss in over 12, only for Matt to fall to a catch off Chetan Depala (jnr)'s bowling off the final ball of that over. John Barr joined Nick, who was caught in over 21 at 69 – 2. Fraser Crawford then partnered Nick in a stand of 33 runs before John was caught in over 31. Fraser and David Robinson added 90 runs in 59 minutes before David was caught at the wicket. Fraser reached his 50 during this partnership in 62 minutes from 51 balls. With 95 runs to his credit, including four sixes and 11 fours, he finally fell off the last ball of over 50 to the fifth catch of the innings.
With a score of 227 – 5, and three overs remaining, the remaining RCC batsmen continued to attack the bowling, but could only add another 8 runs for the loss of three more wickets. OFCC added to the lustre of their splendid fielding performance by taking these wickets with two more catches and a run-out. RCC's final score of 235 – 8 looked rather small for comfort.
The fall of wickets was: 1- 51 (No 1), 2 – 69 (2), 3 – 102 (3), 4 – 192 (5), 5 – 227 (4), 6 - 230 (7), 7 – 231 (6), 8 – 232 (8). Runs and wickets at the end of various overs were: (15 0 5), (45 0 10), (52 1 15), (67 1 20), (82 2 25,) (102 2 30), (122 3 35), (161 3 40), (191 3 45), (227 5 50), (234 8 53). Extras were W 4, NB 1, B 2, LB 2. RCC received 10 bonus batting points for reaching 200, and OFCC got 8 bowling bonus points.
The first 14 overs of OFCC's innings were quite busy with bowling changes, fall of wickets, runs, etc. Deon Carolus began RCC's attack, bowling downhill. In Stuart Browne's absence, John Barr bowled over 2, uphill. Deon bowled OFCC's No 2, Chetan Depala (snr), with the final ball of over 3. Lee Fortis bowled over 4, and had OFCC's No 1, Ritesh Depala, caught by Ben Charles from the fourth ball of the over. OFCC were 16 – 2, and things were looking rosy for RCC. Deon bowled one more over downhill, and was then replaced by John Barr. After Lee's third over from the bottom end, Deon came back on for another spell of three overs, this time uphill.
By the end of over 14, OFCC had reached 71 – 2, and Nick introduced RCC's left- and right-arm spinners, Haydn Smith and Prabhu Arumugam. In Prabhu's third over, OFCC's No. 3, Chetan Depala (jnr) hit a real screamer of an off drive, but without lifting it as high as he would have liked. It reached Lewis Jenkins, fielding at wide mid-off, waist high and travelling like a bullet. Lewis jacknifed defensively, hingeing at the hips, and took a very good catch very calmly. OFCC's score became 98 – 3, and 102 – 3 by the end of the over, No. 20.
Haydn continued to bowl very economically, obtaining his reward at the start of over 39, his 13th over, when he had Robert Wynne-Jones (66), OFCC's No. 4, caught by Fraser Crawford. By this stage, OFCC's score was 166 – 4, with 70 runs needed for victory in just under 9 overs. Hardik Souvani, deceptively slightly built, batted at No. 6, and clouted a couple of big sixes in his innings of 20 from 14 balls. Meanwhile, Dershan Depala, OFCC's No. 5, continued to make hay at the other end, achieving his 50 in 76 minutes from 72 balls. Prabhu took a rest at the end of over 42, and Souvani was bowled in over 44 by the second ball of Deon's third spell. OFCC had reached 211 – 5, and needed 25 to win from 22 balls. OFCC's lower-order batsmen placed the ball for singles to give the bowling to Dershan D, who made the most of it. A catch by David Robinson from a skied drive off Deon's bowling in over 46, and a run-out in the same over, left OFCC with the task of scoring 5 runs from the final over. They succeeded with one ball and three wickets to spare. Dershan D finished with a well-deserved 78 not out. It is interesting to note that, with his contribution, OFCC made 22 runs for the loss of two wickets in the last 2.5 overs of their innings.
The fall of wickets was: 1- 12 (No 2), 2 – 16 (1), 3 – 98 (3), 4 – 165 (4), 5 – 211 (6), 6 - 227 (7), 7 – 230 (8). Runs and wickets at the end of various overs were: (27 2 5), (47 2 10), (80 2 15), (102 3 20), (113 3 25,) (131 3 30), (157 3 35), (176 4 40), (224 5 45), (239 7 46.5). Extras were W 1, NB 6, B 4, LB 6. OFCC received 30 points for their win, and RCC received 7 bonus bowling points, taking their total to 17 points.
