Radlett CC 2nd XI v Berkhamsted on Sat 03 Jul 2010 at 1.00
Radlett CC Won by 100 runs
Match report
The weather for this match was dry and hot, with small clouds providing intermittent shade. A light northerly breeze brought increasing cloud cover as the match progressed. The second-hand pitch was cut short. There was just a hint of moisture at the edges of the new soil in the old footholds, but the main part of the pitch looked dry. The outfield was certainly dry and fast. Nick Fielden won the toss, and decided that RCC would bat first.
Andre Sharma and Nick opened the innings, but for once, RCC made a poor start, with both openers out at 13 – 2 mid-way through over 5. John Barr and Fraser Crawford began the repair job cautiously, reaching 47 before John was bowled during over 16. Fraser and David Robinson then shared a good stand of 99 in 59 minutes, with Fraser reaching his 50 in 84 minutes from 82 balls before David was LBW to BCC's third change bowler in over 36. Fraser and Haydn Smith then cemented the recovery with another quick-scoring partnership. They reached a total of 200 - 4 from a single in over 47. Three balls later, Fraser's next scoring shot gave him an excellent ton in 137 minutes from 129 balls. Unfortunately, Haydn was caught from the first ball of over 48 with the score on 202, having helped to add 56 runs in 38 minutes. Fraser followed in over 49, leaving the score at 206 – 6. With 4.3 overs and four wickets left, the remaining RCC batsmen continued to look for quick runs. They added 21 more runs for the loss of three wickets for a final total of 227 – 9, apparently rather too small for comfort.
The fall of wickets was: 1- 13 (No 1), 2 – 13 (2), 3 – 47 (3), 4 – 146 (5), 5 – 202 (6), 6 - 206 (4), 7 – 208 (7), 8 – 214 (9), 9 – 223 (8). Runs and wickets at the end of various overs were: (14 2 5), (34 2 10), (43 2 15), (65 3 20), (86 3 25), (103 3 30), (136 3 35), (162 4 40), (197 4 45), (209 7 50), (227 9 53). Extras were W 0, NB 3, B 14, LB 7. RCC received 10 bonus batting points for reaching 200, and BCC got 9 bowling bonus points.
Deon Carolus and Stuart Browne opened the bowling impressively for RCC. Deon bowled BCC's Nos 1 and 2 in overs 3 and 7 respectively, and Stuart had BCC's No 3 caught by Fraser Crawford from an attempted drive in over 8. BCC's score at the end of over 8 was 19 – 3. Ben Charles caught BCC's No 5 off Deon in over 11, and Stuart had successful LBW appeals against BCC's Nos 6 and 7 in overs 14 and 16. At this point, BCC's score was 54 – 6, with BCC's No 4, Olly Jannaway, on 32 not out. He was joined by BCC's wicket-keeper, Stuart Hardy, for what became the highest yielding partnership of BCC's innings.
Having bowled nine overs each, Deon and Stuart gave way to RCC's right and left arm spinners, Prabhu Arumugam and Haydn Smith. Jannaway reached an entertaining 50 in 64 minutes from 46 balls before being caught five minutes later by David Robinson off Prabhu's bowling. The fall of this wicket, at 92 – 7, caused much rejoicing among the RCC players. Prabhu went on to take BCC's remaining three wickets, including that of Hardy (44), last man out. Haydn's valuable contribution had been to bowl 9 overs for a miserly 16 runs, and to catch BCC's No 10 at slip off Prabhu's bowling.
The fall of wickets was: 1- 4 (No 2), 2 – 19 (1), 3 – 19 (3), 4 – 31 (5), 5 – 42 (6), 6 - 54 (7), 7 – 92 (4), 8 – 106 (9), 9 – 114 (10), 10 – 127 (8). Runs and wickets at the end of various overs were: (11 1 5), (31 3 10), (54 5 15), (67 6 20), (93 7 25), (106 8 30), (119 9 35), (127 10 37.3). Extras were W 0, NB 1, B 0, LB 0. RCC had won by exactly 100 runs, proving that their own score was perfectly adequate. RCC received 30 points for their win, while BCC got no batting bonus points to add to their existing bowling bonus points.
