Hoddesdon v Radlett CC 2nd XI on Sat 26 Jun 2010 at 1.00
Match was Drawn
Match report
The day of the match was dry and hot, with a strong cross wind blowing from RH gully to RH gully. Small clouds covered the sun from time to time. The pitch was dry, brown and mown short. The outfield had large areas of brown, and proved to be extremely fast. This, together with the rather small overall size of the ground, added up to problems for the outfielders. Nick Fielden won the toss, and decided to bat first.
Matt Soffair and Nick opened the RCC innings, adding 41 runs before Nick was caught during HCC's first change bowler's first over. Andre Sharma and Matt then shared a hundred partnership in little more than an hour before Andre was also caught, off Matt Byrne, HCC's U17 right-arm slow bowler. Matt's own hundred, which took 122 minutes and 125 balls and included three sixes and 14 fours, followed soon afterwards. Matt (112) was also caught off Byrne off the last ball of over 42 with the score on 205 – 3. From this promising position, RCC began to lose wickets at regular intervals.
One or two of RCC's early batsmen had played a classic type of innings, defending against the good balls while waiting for bad ones to hit. Unfortunately, HCC didn't bowl a lot of bad balls. Coupled with the high scoring potential of the ground, and HCC's well-deserved reputation for fast scoring, the need for an unusually large score was indicated. RCC's remaining batsmen did their best to oblige, but each one in turn lost his wicket while playing an attacking shot. Fraser Crawford (37) hit two sixes and two fours in his innings, but fell to a return catch by Byrne shortly after Matt Soffair's dismissal. The most productive partnership, between Deon Carolus and David Robinson, lasted 11 minutes and produced 23 runs, 19 of them from Deon. The next longest partnership lasted for only 5 minutes. RCC's last wicket fell at 278 in the final over of the innings. The last 7 wickets had added a useful 73 runs in 10 overs and two balls, and occupied the full quota of overs, but at a high cost in wickets.
The fall of wickets was: 1- 41 (No 2), 2 – 149 (3), 3 – 205 (1), 4 – 213 (4), 5 – 225 (5), 6 - 235 (7), 7 – 249 (8), 8 – 272 (9), 9 – 272 (6), 10 – 278 (10). Runs and wickets at the end of various overs were: (19 0 5), (50 1 10), (62 1 15), (93 1 20), (114 1 25,) (134 1 30), (154 1 35), (183 2 40), (235 5 45), (266 7 50), (278 10 52.2). Extras were W 6, NB 1, B 12, LB 0. HCC's most successful bowler was Matt Byrne, with 6 – 69. RCC gained the maximum 10 bonus batting points for reaching 200, and HCC got the maximum 10 bowling bonus points for taking all 10 wickets.
Deon Carolus and Stuart Browne opened the bowling against HCC, who needed to score at nearly 6 runs per over for victory from their 47 over allocation. The HCC opening batsmen, Rob Walters and Matt Byrne, began cautiously, but soon began to score more freely. Walters made 48 in 51 minutes from 52 balls before Stuart was successful with an LBW appeal. Fraser Crawford took the next wicket, having HCC's No 3 well stumped by Ben Charles with the last ball of over 27, at 144 – 2. The score reached 218 – 2 at the end of over 39, when Deon began his second spell, bowling HCC's No. 4 with his first ball. HCC's fourth wicket stand then made 59 unbeaten runs from the remaining 7.5 overs – only two runs short of victory, with seven wickets standing. The match thus ended in a very exciting draw, with HCC taking the honours. HCC's Matt Byrne scored an undefeated 117 in 183 minutes from 118 balls to add to his six wicket haul from the first innings.
The fall of wickets was:1 – 76 (No 1), 2 – 144 (3), 3 – 218 (4). Runs and wickets at the end of various overs were: (11 0 5), (48 0 10), (85 1 15), (99 1 20), (135 1 25), (165 2 30), (195 2 35), (222 3 40), (256 3 45), (277 3 47). Extras were W 0, NB 5, B 2, LB 5. RCC added three bowling bonus points to their 10 from the first innings, and HCC doubled their total to the maximum of 20 bonus points.
