Match report
A cold north wind blew quite strongly for this match. The day was cold, cloudy, grey and dry. The pitch had been used previously, and repaired. Some areas of the pitch looked slightly damp, and the short-mown grass had tinges of green in places. HCC won the toss, and chose to bat first.

Deon Carolus, bowling downwind, opened the attack. HCC's No. 1 played the last ball of the first over defensively to forward short leg, where Matt Soffair took a good one-handed catch. HCC 6 – 1, and a good start had been made. Stuart Browne bowled from the other end, and the score reached 37 – 1 after 10 overs. Josh Charles took two catches behind the stumps off Deon's bowling in overs 11 and 15, and the HCC score became 43 – 3 at the end of the over. John Barr replaced Stuart for over 16, the score moved to 60 – 3 at the end of over 20, and Lee Fortis took over from Deon for over 21.

Lee took a wicket in each of his third, fourth and fifth overs (the fourth and fifth being wicket maidens), with catches by John Barr, David Robinson (a particularly nimble gully catch taken about five feet from his left ankle) and Nick Fielden. By the end of over 31, HCC's score was 88 – 6, and Simon Jackson had begun a spell upwind. Deon returned for over 35, and Stuart for over 38. In over 40, Josh Charles stumped Cliff Cavanagh, HCC's young No 4, off Stuart's bowling, and HCC's score became 123 – 7. Richard Cordingley, HCC's No. 8, continued to score steadily, but in over 48, Josh rounded off another good keeping performance by achieving a second stumping off Stuart's bowling to dismiss HCC's No. 9. This made the score 151 – 8. Following a batsmen's mixup, Richard Cordingley was run out by a calm throw from Fraser Crawford to Deon in over 51. HCC's Nos 10 and 11 increased the score from 165 to 177 – 9 by the end of their 53 overs.

The fall of wickets was: 1 – 6 (No 1), 2 – 37 (2), 3 – 42 (3), 4 - 83 (5), 5 – 88 (6), 6 – 88 (7), 7 – 123 (4), 8 -151 (9), 9 – 165 (8). Runs and wickets at the end of various overs were: (17 1 5), (37 1 10), (43 3 15), (60 3 20), (82 3 25), ( 88 5 30), (104 6 35), (125 7 40), (141 7 45), (165 8 50), (177 9 53). Extras were W 1, NB 2, B 1, LB 5. RCC acquired 9 bowling bonus points, and HCC received 2 x 3 = 6 batting bonus points from their innings. RCC needed a scoring rate of about 3.8 runs per over from their 47 over allocation for victory.

Matt Soffair and Nick Fielden opened RCC's innings, reaching 36 – 0 after 10 overs and 62 – 0 after 13 overs, the end of the bowling allocations for HCC's young opening pair. HCC's left arm slow bowler, Andy Brazill was first change, with medium paced Chris Dew bowling downwind. Dew had Nick caught in over 17 with the RCC score 69. Matt Soffair reached his 50 from 74 balls in 84 minutes at the start of over 24, but David Robinson, RCC's No. 3, was caught later in the same over. RCC 91 – 2. Richard Cordingley, HCC's right arm leg spinner, replaced Dew for over 25 The score reached 113 - 2 in over 32, but Fraser Crawford was caught at the wicket off the last ball.

In Cordingley's next over, Matt pushed the second ball firmly to cover point, called for a run, and set off. John Barr obeyed the call, but cover's return reached the keeper, standing up, with John a yard or so short of his ground. RCC 113 – 4. Matt was caught at the wicket from the first ball of the next over with the score still on 113, and the chance of a hat-trick for Brazill. Lee Fortis prevented this, but the required run rate had become 65 in 12.5 overs, greater than anything achieved so far in the course of the match. This placed RCC's remaining batsmen under considerable pressure. All of them tried to push the score along, but HCC's bowlers proved better able to take wickets than RCC's batsmen were to score runs. Both Brazill and Cordingley got considerable turn from the pitch, and profited as a result. When Simon Jackson was caught just inside the wide long-on boundary, aiming for a six, but seeing the ball slowed down by the wind, RCC's score was 153 – 9 with only 16 balls remaining, and the match ended in a rather tense draw.

The fall of wickets was: 1 - 69 (No. 2), 2 - 91 (3), 3 – 113 (4), 4 – 113 (5), 5 – 113 (1), 6 – 124 (6), 7 – 137 (8), 8 – 150 (7), 9 – 153 (9). Runs and wickets at the end of various overs were: (14 0 5), (36 0 10), (64 0 15), (81 1 20), (92 2 25), (109 2 30), (122 5 35), (136 6 40), (153 9 45), (157 9 47). Extras were W 0, NB 1, B 3, LB 7. RCC got 2 x 2 = 4 batting bonus points, making a total of 13, and HCC obtained 9 bowling bonus points for a total of 15.
