Radlett CC 2nd XI v Leverstock Green on Sat 05 Jun 2010 at 1.00
Radlett CC Won by 55 runs
Match report
This game began in sunshine, but the sky quickly became overcast, and the rest of the game was played under continuous low cloud. Nick Fielden won the toss, and decided to bat.
Gwilym Jones and Nick opened RCC's innings, and made careful progress against LGCC's new ball attack. The initial scoring rate was quite slow, with only 24 runs coming from the first 10 overs without loss. The partnership's 50 arrived in over 17, and the score reached 62 at the end of over 20. 100 – 0 arrived in over 28 after 93 minutes, and Gwilym reached his 50 from 88 balls with a four off the first ball of the next over. He celebrated with the first of his two sixes two balls later, helping the score to 117 – 0 at the end of over 30. At this stage, Brad Klosterman, LGCC's opening bowler, took a rest, and LGCC's third change bowler, Charlie Mahanama, took over. Nick reached his 50 from 83 balls in 111 minutes with a boundary during over 32, but in the next over, with 132 runs on the board, Gwilym was caught off Mahanama for 73. His partnership with Nick had given the innings a very solid start, although their overall scoring rate of about 4 runs per over did not allow RCC to feel complacent at that stage.
David Robinson joined Nick, and they reached 150 – 1 at the end of over 35. David was caught at long off from an aggressive drive during over 38, leaving the score on 161 – 2. Fraser Crawford and Nick then took the score to 167 – 2 by the end of over 40, and 200 – 2 in over 46. Fraser (29) was bowled at the start of over 47 with only three more runs added. John Barr took over, helping the score to 234 – 3 by the end of over 50. 250 – 3 was reached with a boundary by John in over 52, only 19 minutes and 37 balls after the 200th run. Unfortunately, John was bowled by the next ball, having scored 26 runs from 19 balls in 17 minutes. At this stage, Nick Fielden had scored 93 not out. Shameel Ahmed supported him through the final eight balls of the innings by placing each of the three balls which he faced wide of the close fielders for comfortable singles. The first two of these shots gave Nick the strike, allowing him to complete a well-deserved 102 not out from 131 balls in 185 minutes. RCC's final score of 262 – 4 looked very encouraging. Extras for the innings were W 0, NB 0, B 13, LB 3. At tea, RCC had earned the maximum 10 bonus batting points, and LGCC four bonus bowling points.
Deon Carolus, RCC's new 2nd XI overseas player, took the new ball, bowling from the south end of the ground. He bowls fast and enthusiastically. His early overs included a sprinkling of South African-type front foot no balls, though their frequency decreased as time went by. Stuart Browne bowled the first five overs from the other end, removing Brad Klosterman LBW in the course of his third over, a wicket maiden. LGCC's score after 10 overs was 21 – 1.
Josh Charles caught LGCC's captain, David Coulshed, off Deon's bowling in over 11, and LGCC's score became 25 – 2. Alex King, LGCC's wicket-keeper, and a member of the Queensland squad, took his place, and began to score rapidly. Rob Crocker began a spell from the north end at over 12, while Stuart returned at the south end to relieve Deon at over 15. In over 19, Stuart succeeded with another LBW appeal against LGCC's No. 3 to make the score 64 – 3.
LGCC reached 77 – 3 by the end of over 20, but King played the first ball of Stuart's next over towards Lee Fortis at deepish mid-on, and called for a run. He was half-way down the pitch before he was sent back by his non-striking partner, and slipped slightly while turning round. Lee fielded the ball, and threw it to Josh Charles. Josh took the bails off for a clear runout, and LGCC had slumped to 77 – 4. This was very helpful to the RCC cause, since King's 36 runs came in only 36 minutes from 32 balls, and he could have improved LCC's scoring rate even more if he had stayed.
A large chunk of LGCC's middle order was removed by Rob Crocker (No. 5 bowled in over 28, and No. 6 caught Fraser Crawford in over 30) and Stuart Browne (No. 7 LBW in over 30). By the end of over 30, LGCC's score was 126 – 7, and the end-game had apparently begun. Deon replaced Stuart, but LGCC's No. 8, Dave Tyson, had his own agenda. He began to enjoy himself in a carefree way, keeping RCC at bay while scoring runs quite freely. He was well supported by No. 9, Jamie Wallace, and the score had reached 150 before Deon bowled Wallace in over 37, for a wicket maiden.
Majid Khan, LGCC's No. 10, took the carefree theme to new heights, scoring mainly in fours. For over 42, with time running short, Nick Fielden replaced Rob with Fraser Crawford. Fraser's third ball tempted Khan into an off drive, and John Barr took the catch at long off. LGCC 187 – 10, and a maximum of 33 balls remained of the innings. Khan's 24, including five boundaries, had been scored from 21 balls. Having broken the partnership, Fraser came off at the end of his one over, being replaced by Rob Crocker for over 44. LGCC's No. 11, Adam Thomas, played steadily, while Tyson continued to accumulate runs, and the overs flashed by. By the end of over 45, LGCC had achieved maximum batting bonus points at 207 – 9, and Stuart Browne replaced Rob Crocker for over 46.
Dave Thomas attempted to drive Stuart's first ball over the long off boundary, but he only succeeded in skying it to silly mid-off, where Lee Fortis was standing. Stuart, Josh and several assorted fielders all began to sprint towards the landing spot, but Lee calmly called 'MINE', and everyone else stopped. Lee took the catch cleanly, and everyone else began to sprint again, this time to congratulate Lee on his nerveless catch. The game had been won with margins of 55 runs and 11 balls. Dave Tyson's 46 was scored in 68 minutes from 51 balls, a great effort.
Extras for the innings were W 1, NB 8, B 1, LB 6. RCC got 30 points for the win, and LGCC got 10 batting bonus points to add to their 4 bonus bowling points.
