Match report .

The morning sky for this game was grey and overcast, with periods of drizzle. A light northerly breeze spread the club flags and the rain. It felt cold, and the outfield was wet. Nick Fielden won the toss for RCC, and decided to bat. Although the rain had stopped by about mid-day, the umpires decided to delay the start from 1:00 pm to 1:30 pm to allow the field to dry a little. In expectation of good light until 8 pm or after, they also decided not to reduce the length of the game from its planned 53 + 47 overs.

David Robinson and Nick Fielden opened the RCC innings in intermittent drizzle. The bowlers' runups were wet, and sawdust was applied frequently. Despite this, David was bowled in over 4, having scored 13 of the current total of 15. Fraser Crawford joined Nick, and played some very confident shots as the RCC total reached 50 – 1 in over 10, after 42 minutes. Fraser's productive innings of 23 runs from only 14 balls, including five boundaries, ended when he called for a quick single, but was sent back by Nick. Fraser's momentum carried him further from his ground, turning on the damp pitch was difficult, OFCC's fielding was good, and he was run out, very unluckily. By this stage, more rain had fallen, the ball had become slippery and difficult to hold, and OFCC continued to rely on their fast bowlers. John Barr hit four boundaries in his total of 18, Nick Fielden continued steadily, other batsmen made brief appearances, and the RCC total reached 100 – 4 in over 24, after 100 minutes.

Nick Fielden reached his 50 in 107 minutes from 138 balls during over 35. Simon Jackson, RCC's No 8, began his innings with the total on 130 - 6 in over 36. By this time, the rain had practically stopped, and OFCC experimented with Paresh Somani, a spin bowler, for overs 37 and 39. Combined with the still slippery ball, this allowed an increase in RCC's run rate as Simon hit two of the three signature 6s in his innings over the deep mid-wicket area. At the end of over 39, RCC's total had reached 153 - 6, and an OFCC fast bowler took over from Paresh. Simon reached his 50 in 36 minutes from 36 balls during over 45. He was bowled for 51 in the next over with the total on 196 - 7. Josh Charles joined Nick, and they continued to accumulate runs. The total reached 200 - 7 in over 47, and 231 – 7 by the end of the 53rd over. Nick carried his bat for a well-deserved 92 not out.

OFCC's extras were W 1, NB 0, B 0, LB 2. Their fielding was good. Considering the conditions, their three fast bowlers performed very well, delivering 51 overs of the 53 in the innings. Unfortunately, this increased the time to complete the innings, by about 28 minutes more than the 3 hours allowed by the match rules. After allowing for unavoidable delays due to lost balls, the wet conditions, the drinks break, etc, etc, the umpires decided to offer Nick Fielden the choice of bowling a maximum of either 42 or 47 overs at the OFCC batsmen. Nick chose to bowl 42 overs in reply. At tea, RCC had earned the maximum 10 batting bonus points for exceeding a total of 200, and OFCC had 7 bowling bonus points, one for each of the RCC wickets which they had taken.

When Stuart Browne and Lee Fortis opened the bowling at the start of the OFCC innings, no rain had fallen for about 1.5 hours, and the outfield had become drier. Stuart was very economical, as usual, and both he and Lee took a wicket in their first five over spells, leaving the OFCC score at 29 – 2 after 10 overs. Nick Fielden used a total of six bowlers in short spells, mostly changing their bowling ends if they returned. OFCC scored steadily throughout their innings, without ever sustaining the demanding scoring rate of 5.5 runs /over which they needed for victory. They struck a total of 17 fours compared with RCC's total of 26 fours plus three sixes. Hayden Smith bowled his left-arm spinners very well with the drier ball, finishing with 2 wickets for 12 runs from 9 overs.

By 8 pm, after 42 overs had been bowled in increasingly poor visibility, OFCC had reached a score of 149 - 6. The game thus ended in a draw. RCC gained 6 bonus bowling points for a total of 16 points, while OFCC obtained one batting bonus point for a total of 8 points. RCC's extras were W 8, NB 0, B 4, LB 0.
