Met. Police Bushey 11 v Radlett CC 5th XI on Sat 06 Aug 2005 at 1.30
Radlett CC Lost 8 wickets
Match report
The 5s, not only without their captain and vice-captain, shot themselves in the other foot through the no-show of two players, one managing to crash his car (on the way to a match with the police!) and the other ferrying relatives to the airport.
So, the 8 players plus one club official travelled to an away game closer to the clubhouse than the home pitch. Met Police playing at their sportsground on the other side of the road from Queens School.
Mike Dexter won the toss and elected to bat. Radlett got off to a solid start. Captain Mike Dexter and Shabbir Foyez coped admirably with the lively Met opening pair until Foyez was seduced into a rash shot to a quick full toss and played on. Matt Woodhead was to follow a couple of balls later, bowled by a pearler that deviated visciously off the seam.
Luca Guerrini joined Dexter and helped steady the ship, playing some fine shots and moving swiftly on to 14 until he fell. Dexter continued with his normal game and was looking good for another half century until he had the misfortune to step back too far to a shot and hit wicket.
With two missing, the middle order suddenly became the tail, and the father/son Mansell combo held up affairs for a while and looked as if they might bat through to the end until the return of the Met opener who removed John Mansell with a repeat of the unplayable ball that had earlier removed Woodhead.
In the half hour before tea, the Met, under a lively barrage from John Mansell and Shabbir Foyez, were lucky to lose just the one wicket, a stunning reflex catch low down by keeper Guerrini off Foyez.
Foyez continued after tea and, moving to around the wicket, had the Met batsmen in real trouble, but he was to get no further reward. However, with so many overs available, the Met were able to bide their time. The introduction of Woodhead saw the second wicket fall. Again, another catch taken low down, this time by Paul Rich as he threw himself forward to a thick edge travelling fast and low to the gully.
Guerrini took off the pads to have a bowl and a couple of half chances went to ground before the Met finally wrapped up the game in the 25th over to take themselves to the top of the table. Radlett still need a couple of good results in the remaining two games to avoid the drop.
