Radlett CC 5th XI v Watton on Stone 11 on Sat 30 Jul 2005 at 1.30
Match was Abandoned
Match report
This week’s opposition at Queen’s school was Watton-on-Stone who are currently vying for promotion. Radlett won the toss and elected to field in overcast conditions favourable to the bowling.
The openers started well with Vikram Rajput in his usual role and with U15 seamer John Mansell returning from injury to strengthen the attack. This combination of left and right arm seam bowling proved quite a handful for the batsman who were confined to defensive strokes within the ring. But the Radlett openers, despite bowling well, had little luck. The Watton batting survived and it took the introduction of Ron Comfort to the attack to make a difference as he took 2 wickets in his first 2 overs. His variety and change of pace mesmerised the Watton batsman. Shabbir Foyez and Kailash Morjaria, returning from county U15 duty, both bowled well enough to take wickets, but it wasn’t to be.
It took the return of Mansell for his second 5 over spell to dislodge the Watton top scorers and his accuracy was rewarded by 3 wickets which included the keeper taking an athletic one-hander at least 12 yards to his left. The closing spell of Rajput and Comfort saw the final 5 wickets fall. Rajput took 2 in 2 balls and Comfort again frustrated the batsman resulting in a sharp close-in catch taken by Foyez and a nice take in the deep by Martin Lattimore. Radlett fielded well as a unit under the captaincy of Rajput and restricted Watton to 144 from 47 overs. There were three wickets each to Rajput and Mansell with Comfort weighing in with four wickets.
Radlett’s batting, faced with seemingly innocuous bowling, capitulated without apparent reason. Whilst the Watton bowling lacked penetration, it certainly good enough to deceive Radlett who found themselves staring defeat squarely in the face having been reduced to 21-6 after only 10 overs. Vishal Patel showed some resistance and Shabbir Foyez was doing his best to stabilise the situation when torrential rain intervened. The square turned into a lake and even after an hour’s drying, large puddles remained on the playing strip and in the outfield. A game in which Radlett might have expected more, given their solid performance in the field, and in which Watton felt they should have gone home with the spoils having turned over the Radlett top order so easily, was abandoned.
This leaves Radlett with 3 matches left and currently just out of the relegation zone. To maintain a place in division 12 will require the determination shown in the field to be carried over into the batting.
