Radlett CC 5th XI v Waltham X Rosedale 111 on Sat 23 Jul 2005 at 1.30
Radlett CC Lost 3 wickets
Match report
This weeks clash saw Radlett host Waltham Cross Rosedale 3rd XI who are also fighting to avoid the relegation zone.
Waltham won the toss and elected to field. The rain of the previous day coupled with the damp conditions in the morning made the wicket unpredictable with variable bounce. Opening up with young Ashley Tillett and Vikram Rajput, the Radlett innings commenced slowly but surely. The ball was doing all sorts and to play true strokes was a task in itself. Tillett started off well but got out to a lifter from their rapid young bowler which caught an outside edge. Shabbir Foyez joined Rajput at the crease but did not last long, playing one on the up to give an easy chance. This paved an early entry for the promising young colt Nick Robinson whose positive strokeplay and tidy defence took him to 14.
The middle order collapse included the runout of Duncan Fraser who failed to realise at which end he was supposed to be. The innings closed early after 31 overs at only 91 all out.
Foyez and Michael Williams opened the bowling with a short leg 2 slips and a gully - the order of the day was attack. Foyez bowled a good line and length from the outset and in his 2nd over saw the opener edge a quick ball to 1st slip, the catch being held low one-handed by Rajput – much to the amazement of the batsman. Chris Barnes held a good catch off Foyez. Williams took three catches, the best being a skyer off his own bowling.
After 6 overs Radlett’s low score looked as if it might be enough with Waltham standing at 7-3. But Waltham fought back well on a pitch that was helping our bowlers. Despite the Radlett attack keeping to a tight line and bowling with pace, partnerships of 41 and 28 gave Waltham the upper hand.
Tillett bowled a good mixture but failed to get the wickets he probably deserved. Rajput bowled a brisk short spell for 2 wickets one of which was a superb 2nd slip catch by Tillett. Besides a couple of dropped catches the Radlett fielding was commendable and to contain the opposition for 33 overs whilst maintaining an attacking field showed they had both the character and motivation to look for a victory. In the end it wasn’t to be and Waltham, even though they lost 7 wickets ran out fairly comfortable winners.
