Old Owens 111 v Radlett CC 5th XI on Sat 09 Jul 2005 at 1.30
Radlett CC Won 139 runs

Match report Yet again Radlett failed to win the toss, which looked like it could be crucial on a damp, green wicket at the Old Owens ground. Unsurprisingly, the Owens skipper invited Radlett to bat. Eddie Saunders braved a sambuca-induced hangover to put on about 20 in the first 8 overs with Steve Marsh, before he was outdone by a clever piece of bowling by the Owens opener. Marsh played a crucial anchor role on a difficult wicket, which seemed to deliver inconsistent bounce with regularity. When he was finally dismissed, the score had progressed nicely to about 100 from 30 overs, with useful contributions from Watman and Foyez.

The outfield was starting to quicken up, but was still too long to expect many boundaries. Duncan Fraser adopted his own response to this problem, by hoicking the Owens bowling attack over long on and long off. Cameos from Matt Barrett, Matt Woodhead and Vikram Rajput supported a measured innings by Duncan Fraser, as the score progressed towards the 200 target. When Fraser was finally dismissed for 64, Radlett had all but secured maximum batting points. Tail-enders, Peter Warne and Mike Williams, made sure that Radlett exceeded 200 in the final over.

Having batted the full 53 overs the game looked set to go the distance. But with many of the Radlett players needing to get away early, the Owens players generously collapsed in their innings.

Matt Barrett opened the bowling, but found a strategically place hydrant cover disturbing his run up. At the other end Vikram seemed to be struggling, having not changed into his bowling trousers, although he managed to snap up the Owens opener caught at square leg in his first over. Peter Warne bowled the fifth over and also found the going tough. By the time Matt Barrett began the sixth over, Radlett had gifted almost all the Owens total of 20 runs in wides and no-balls.

The game changed back in Radlett’s favour as Matt Barrett and Peter Warne took 6 wickets in as many overs and reduced the home side to 27 for 7. Peter Warne took the pick of the wickets, bowling a stubborn, but surprised batsman round his legs, with a ball that “turned a mile”. The Owens tail wagged for half a dozen overs, but was eventually mopped up, the final wicket coming from a brilliant run out, off his weak side, by Eddie Saunders. The Owens team ended up on 64 all out, with Matt Barrett claiming 5 for 6 off 11 overs and Peter Warne taking 3 for 39 off 9 overs.
