Radlett CC 5th XI v Botany Bay 111 on Sat 02 Jul 2005 at 1.30
Radlett CC Lost 127 runs
Match report
Well into the heart of the season this weeks clash saw Radlett V’s team return to their home ground at Queens. As there had been rain showers late in the week this made the ground difficult to play on especially for bowling. The team had many a change till the morning of the match and the scale of reshuffle was the magnitude of a cabinet one. New to the skipper role and as stand in Vikram welcomed all his 10 men to the field for the challenge that lay ahead in the form of Botany Bay. The captains duly tossed up Botany Bay losing the toss and Vikram elected to field on an overcast, humid but dry day.
Botany Bay openers showed good shot selection providing a formidable partnership. They played the opening pair of Vikram and Michael well to accumulate runs. Vikram managed to tame the pair with a fair line and length but they waited patiently to hit boundaries.
The first break came when Peter Warne clean bowled their opener with his spin. Vishal Patel too joined the party by bowling the other opener. Vishal had a tidy spell of seam bowling that brought him 3 wickets. Close in fielders of Pat Reid and Tony Fielden put pressure on batsman to hit out and create errors. A few missed chances were dropped but the fielders especially new to fielding showed promise and will reap rewards in matches to come. Both Ashley and Vishal were quick to cut off balls and their youthful vigour is finally showing. Ashley bowled 15 overs unchanged to tie down and force batsman to play shots and make errors. But remained wicketless. Botany Bay’s run rate was steady and over 5 an over with the aid of extras they ran away with a total of 245 from 46 overs.
In between innings Vikram did manage to change into his batting trousers without causing any disruption or delay to the match.
Radlett opened with Martin Latimore and Pat Reid. Botany opened with a slow bowler who proved to be a handful for our top order. Pat got on to a good start but being of the hard hitting style he holed out to their slow bowler. Vishal played very consistently to produce an array of shots first scoring shot being a 6! The young pair of Ashley and Vishal steadied the boat and brought hope to the Radlett innings.
Overall the batting lacked the depth to dig out a long draw and the last 4 wickets fell for 38 runs. Also being 2 batsman short proved to be a disadvantage. Botany Bay capitalised on Radletts frail position and played well enough on the day to win the match.
