St. Margaretsbury v Radlett CC 4th XI on Sat 03 Sep 2005 at 12.30
Radlett CC Won 6 wickets

Match report The final game of the season saw Radlett travel to the Essex boarders, needing 17 points to ensure safety. A big ask against second placed, and already promoted St.Margaretsbury.

Wells won the toss for the second time in two weeks (a seasons first!), and asked the home side to bat first on a vastly under prepared wicket.

Nerves were a plenty on the morning of the game. All involved were aware that a loss could see a return to division 7. The pavilion at Radlett was a tense place as we gathered before the game, and the dressing room at St. Margaretsbury equally so.

Radlett took the field in high spirits, aware that early wickets would be vital. A tight opening over caused some panic, and Jez Menzies produced a fine run out from the 6th ball of the day without a run being scored. Being run out for 0 without facing a ball had quite rightly angered the departing batsman. The guilty party was clearly rattled and when he edged a swinging delivery from Neil Lederman to Matt Bell at second slip in the next over, St Margaretsbury were looking down the barrel.

Radlett’s fielding performances in the last few weeks have been a vast improvement from the first part of the season, and again good catches were taken as the St. Margaretsbury top order failed to get to grips with some excellent bowling. Meepa produced one of the finest spells in recent years for the 4ths. His 5 -15 was the highlight of a splendid all round performance. All the bowlers gave their captain everything they had. Some late order hitting enabled the hosts to limp to 136.

Colin Warne and Vice captain Bell set about the modest target in aggressive fashion. Warne chanced his arm a little too early and was caught via a top edge. Oliver Jackson was promoted up the order. He and Bell produced a partnership of the highest quality. From 8 -1 they slowly chipped away at the target. Jackson played second fiddle to Bell as he compiled his 5th 50 of the season, and was eventually caught for 59. They had put on 97 runs and had ensured that the game was won. A couple of quick wickets fell with few runs required. It gave the captain the opportunity to send in Menzies, playing his last game for the club to hit the winning runs, a fitting end for Jez. He shall be missed by the 4’s and we wish him all the best for his retirement. Jackson finished unbeaten on 38, and 30 points meant that we actually finished 12th in the league table. A position that we should be looking to better next year. As a team, we never really got going this year, but the last couple of games showed what we are capable of.

Congratulations to St. Margaretsbury on their promotion, and on the way the game was played. We wish them all the best in division 5 next season.

Many thanks to Tony Cohen for umpiring again.

Thanks also to all that played in the 4’s over the season.

Roll on 2006!!!
