Abbots Langley 11 v Radlett CC 4th XI on Sat 20 Aug 2005 at 1.00
Radlett CC Lost 4 wickets
Match report
The 4’s came out second best in a tough battle against Abbots Langley. The game took several twists and turns and could have gone either way.
On winning the toss, Abbots had little hesitation in asking Radlett to bat on a green, wet wicket.
Matthew Bell, Radlett’s in form batsman, was soon on his way as he tried to impose himself a little too early. Captain Wells and the returning Tony Johnson wrestled back the initiative with an aggressive partnership of 52 for the second wicket. Wells was caught on the boundary for 35, attempting one big shot too many, and when Johnson fell shortly afterwards, Radlett were in trouble. Kailash Morjaria again produced a gutsy innings. He punished the bad ball and showed excellent concentration, something more senior batters had perhaps lacked. Some useful knocks from Sutherland, Luffman and Lederman down the order got Radlett to a total of 137, competitive, but perhaps 30 runs shy.
Radlett needed early wickets and duly got them. Neil Lederman produced an excellent spell and removed one opener with only his second ball. When Meepa had the other opener caught by Luffman, Abbots were reeling at 5 – 2. To their credit, Abbots didn’t panic. Instead, they edged their way towards the total, giving several tough chances along the way. A late flurry of wickets, gave Radlett some hope, but it was a case of too little too late as the target was reached with 4 wickets remaining.
The bowling was fantastic, sadly the catching was not. Neil Lederman returned great figures of 3 – 29 in his 9 overs, and Meepa is back to his best. Survival in division 6 is still in our hands, but the last two games are now must wins.
I think the saying is, ‘Must do better’……..Much, much better.
