Match report The fourths lived up to expectations, losing by seven wickets to second-placed Old Millhillians 2nd XI with only two players remaining from the previous week’s vivid display against St Albans West Indian, another Division Six promotion team.

There was no disgrace in defeat against a stronger side (Millhillians’ first team compete in Division One), and were positives to be drawn, especially a good attitude by the Radlett team all through. The four schoolboy players all impressed – Kailash Morjaria, Vishal Patel, Ramesh Swaminathan and Neil Lederman, the youngest at 15. These four will become good adult players if they remain patient and continue to take their chances when offered.

John Maguire, Matt Barrett’s colleague at Aldenham School, proved to be a tremendous team man as stand-in. He reckoned he was a hockey-playing non-cricketer and his modesty relegated him to a lower batting position than necessary. He gave glimpses of a good cricketer waiting to get out…

The failure of Radlett’s only two senior batsmen meant a total of only 140 and nothing like enough runs on a good batting pitch. With Lederman conceding nine runs off his opening six-over spell of left-arm seam, watched by an understandably proud father John, Millhillians were made to concentrate.

At 67 for three, the chance of an upset was vaguely possible until Zed Gitay struck the ball cleanly against his old club. Gitay snicked his first ball hard, from Jez Menzies, to Jamie Wells at slip, a near-impossible chance that might nevertheless have ricocheted as a catch. After that he played with uncharacteristic selectivity for 42 not out.
