Radlett CC 4th XI v St. Albans West Indians on Sat 30 Jul 2005 at 1.30
Match was Drawn
Match report
Heath Paynter smashed 68 not out off 34 balls, including five sixes, as Radlett dominated a drawn match against St Albans West Indians, a side competing for Division Six promotion.
Radlett, trying to pull clear of the relegation fringe, finished with a valuable 18 points and could well have pulled off a surprise win if a heavy shower of rain had not changed the conditions adversely for their bowlers. The stunned visitors struggled to earn even two bonus points, replying to Radlett's 214 for five with 155 for eight.
Paynter, now recovered after three months out with a shoulder injury, reached the crease with eight overs remaining and the Zimbabwean returned to the pavilion undefeated after adding 85 runs, mostly with good support from Phil Cooper.
Paynter's muscular assault included a pulled six onto the Thameslink railway line while hitting 22 runs off the final over. This rounded off a steady build-up by stand-in captain Matt Bell, with 55, and Charlie Randall, 30, sensibly keeping wickets in hand on a testing pitch.
Radlett's score seemed more than enough, and Paynter's ability to hit the seam exposed the West Indians' earlier shortcomings and gave their top order a torrid time. `Meepa' Meepagama's accuracy pushed them well behind the asking rate, and both openers had gone when rain soaked the pitch and softened the footholds.
Meepa clean-bowled two victims when play resumed, but the pitch had quietened considerably and the ball was wet. This probably contributed to a rash of dropped catches, about eight, when the West Indians attempted to play some shots. Diving catches by Prabhu Arumugam and Jeremy Menzies twice raised the tone considerably, monarchs of a butter-fingered kingdom.
Radlett had their opponents 85 for six and were left regretting the wet conditions. Bell tried everything, rotating the bowlers and setting good fields without ultimate success. Nevertheless this was an encouraging display in the first of three consecutive games against the division's top sides.
