Match report Jamie Wells produced his finest innings for the fourths, his 69 coming at probably a run a ball. Opening the innings, he went for his shots as usual, but this time he was selective and defended the good-length deliveries. In fact the bowlers were given little hope until a sore back began to bother him late on.

Unfortunately erratic bowling handed Cockfosters far too many runs on an awkward pitch, and Radlett could have done with paceman Josh Rose, promoted back to the thirds in the morning. Wells held a great diving catch for the first wicket off Meepa, but further bright moments were few and far between. The fielding was weak with the outstanding exception of Simon Randall, who might have had more than his one run-out.

Cockfosters delayed their declaration for too long, but they might still have won if they had not dropped at least three easy catches. They went close, though Meepa batted out the last two overs easily enough to force a draw with last man Sean Fulton.

Radlett started their long chase against two spinners with the old ball. Simon Randall was brilliantly caught at slip, off his pad not his bat, but his father Charles calmly helped Wells take the score past the 100 in 20 overs and give Radlett an outside chance.

Wells was magnificent, spreading the field with thrilling shots all round the wicket, but he could not bat alone. Randall was castled by a swinging full toss, and Jim Clarke was denied his first fifty of the season with a brute of a ball from a left-arm spinner. Otherwise Radlett's batting lacked strength and know-how.

This month Radlett meet the top-half teams and clearly face a battle against relegation. Last year we were among the promotion favourites, leading the table in June.
