Match report Radlett pulled off an exciting and unexpected victory with seven balls to spare. It was unusual because they had rarely if ever chased down a score of more than 200 in recent years.

Simon Watman’s maiden fourth-team fifty sparked a decisive turn-around in a stand of 90 in 18 overs for the fifth wicket with the veteran Tony Johnson.

Radlett scored steadily on a good pitch, though 65 for four looked ominous for a supposedly depleted batting line-up. Victory was still distant when Watman’s famous paddle stroke over cover’s head and a couple of meaty pulls, began to take toll on the opposition confidence.

Watman soon expanded his stroke range by chipping into the leg-side open spaces, and Johnson began to find the boundary, five in quick succession, to put Radlett on top.

When Johnson holed out for 60, Meepa and Jamie Wells carried on the good work against some nervous bowling. With 11 needed off the last two overs, Wells hit a two and pulled long-hops for six and four to settle the issue.

Matt Bell, having lost two stone since January, looked confident in his first match, as an athletic Adonis should, and the nut-brown Wells appeared to have lost none of his captaincy magic after his golf tournament work with Bell in Tenerife.

Finchleians would have raised a much bigger total if Meepa had not performed heroically with the ball for 22 overs. Otherwise the bowling attack lacked threat after Matt Barrett’s early burst.
