Old Camdenians v Radlett CC 3rd XI on Sat 30 Jul 2005 at 1.30
Radlett CC Won 138 runs

Match report Radlett 3’s a remarkable tale………………

Someone somewhere is feeling sorry for Radlett’s third team. Nearly every week Radlett manages somehow to bowl first enabling a run chase to 30 points. Not this week however Old Camdenians won the toss and elected to Field, a brave move with only 9 players on the field. Campbell Horlock and Paul Windmill made the most of the situation with a lightning start not that it made any difference the number of fielders O C’s had as the ball was deposited over the boundary into the trees. The 100 came up in only the 12th over, and the 13th produced the first wicket, Horlock gone for 67 caught and bowled by the rather nice O C’s captain Rodger on his back. This turned out to be the last time the O C’s congratulated their captain or for that matter talked to him. Some very good batting followed Windmill 53, Simon Gray whilst out of salts from his recent BBOT award stuck at it for 67. Some further good hitting (not outs from Smithers and Crocker) enabled Amjad ‘the curry’ Khan (stand in for the injured Hardy) to declare on 261 for 6 in 47 overs.
Tea was taken, the best away tea this year produced a downpour that completely washed out the square and any chance of further play. Or that’s what we thought!
Rodger was having none of it; he was determined to have a bat! despite the fact that a few of the Radlett team had changed and were heading back to Radlett!
His team realised they were only on 1 point and to get 262 in a now reduced 40 overs would require a miracle, so 10 pts was for the taking. Bob ‘the red cap’ was not impressed but accepted his captain would not change his mind and watched on while Rodger soaked up the rain with an old umpires coat. The game was back on and down to Radlett to claim further points. Josh Rose claimed two wickets in the first over well caught by Johnson and had a hatrick appeal turned down by the outstanding away umpire. The game progressed nicely for Radlett until Bob strode to the wicket muttering something about the batting order being wrong (apparently he thought Flintoff and Pieterson should have been promoted up the order), a quick fire I’m not hanging around out here 28 was the last attempt at overcoming the total required.
Radlett continued to pick up wickets until the final 10 overs when O C’s put up some stern resistance despite some good bowling from Carpenter and Chaudry. With only two overs to go and two wickets still required it looked like the home side would hang on for the draw, but no, Simon Gray picked up an LBW with the third ball of the penultimate over giving him 3 balls to win the game against the number 11 O C’s bat. It was nearly achieved when a steppeling bouncer hit the poor fellow on the glove and handle only to drop safely avoiding the whole of the Radlett team whom encircled the batsman. To the last over Josh Rose brought back into the attack and a well-set Rodger on strike, the game was dead. At this stage most people would have given up on the run chase, but not Rodger on the fourth ball he charged the bowler and sliced a very hard shot to Nick Ingram at gully, who celebrated in the traditional Ingram fashion! One for the memory, thank you Rodger.
I am going to be the first of many to say ‘ do you remember that game over at old Camdenians’ Remarkable.
