Hertingfordbury v Radlett CC 3rd XI on Sat 09 Jul 2005 at 1.30
Radlett CC Won 6 wickets
Match report
This match between two equally-placed sides resulted in a comfortable win for Radlett, who have now won six of their last seven matches.
The home side won the toss and elected to bat, which suited Richard Hardy’s Radlett side that had, on paper, surely one of the strongest batting sides ever in the Third XI.
Hertingfordbury eventually made 213 for 9 in their 53 overs, which was probably just better than par on this wicket, but was the result of some good work in the fielding and some determined bowling. Mark Evans again bowled long and well for little reward, Josh Rose bowled a beautiful second spell, and Jim Chaudry bowled an excellent spell for three economical wickets.
Radlett had to work hard in the field and dig deep in the muggy heat, and at 200 for 6 with six overs left and two batsmen well set, they looked on course for a score of 230 plus. These last few overs were vital, and Radlett’s fielders and bowlers showed their character and discipline with some excellent “death” bowling, and no less than three run outs.
Great credit must be given to Tony Johnson, who kept wicket immaculately and tirelessly in humid and difficult conditions.
214 to win seemed long odds when Radlett were 38 for 3 with the top batsmen back in the pavilion, and Dominic Ingram in, but still in single figures.
Tim Smithers joined him, and by the time he had left the field the score had been increased by 138 runs, and the game all but won.
Smithers was in withering form, hitting straight sixes from each end that narrowly missed low flying aircraft. Helped by a staggering 50 extras, these two punished every bowler, and without some very good ground fielding the game would have finished much earlier.
Smithers’ power and Ingram’s technique were irrepressible, with the great majority of runs coming in boundaries, a necessity as quick singles between these two are unlikely due to a variety of age-related afflictions. Experience has its compensations and with Smithers ending on 55 and Ingram 81 not out at the end, with Mark Evans joining him to hit the winning four.
In the end this was a convincing win by six wickets and three overs to spare.
So, its up to 5th place and next week it’s a local derby against third in the league Old Haberdashers. The way the 3rds are playing, this side, who were bottom of the league after four games, will surely test any side in this division.
