Knebworth Park v Radlett CC 3rd XI on Sat 02 Jul 2005 at 1.30
Radlett CC Won 5 wickets

Match report Another good win, the fifth from the last six matches, has raised Radlett 3rd XI from bottom of the table five weeks ago to seventh. It was unthinkable at the end of May that this side could be contenders for promotion, but they looked a very competent outfit yesterday.

The team’s batting yips seem to have been cured, and they looked extremely solid, chasing down Knebworth’s total of 141 with five wickets and fifteen overs to spare. The bowling has more variety to it than of late, and the fielding again was excellent, with the seminal moment being Josh Rose’s quite brilliant run out, which turned the game irrevocably Radlett’s way.

Yet it didn’t look “rosy” for Radlett after the first hour, when Knebworth were eighty for one, and scoring at four an over.

Knebworth won the toss and obligingly elected to bat, which suited Richard Hardy’s plan admirably. But Knebworth’s numbers one and three batsmen, both in their early teens batted beautifully, and surely will get buckets of runs in the future for their club. Rose opened the bowling and had no luck, while at the other end Mark Evans bowled his heart out for just one wicket. Nick Ingram and Hardy himself bowled three or four each without result, and a score of in excess of 200 seemed inevitable.

At this point the two young batsmen chanced a quick single to Rose in the covers, and barely made it home after a superb pick-up and throw. When they tried the same thing the next ball, Rose’s throw was six inches lower and hit the stumps for a brilliant run out.

At that point, Dominic Ingram came on to bowl, and with Jim Chaudry at the other end stemmed the flow of runs. Ingram took four wickets getting awkward movement off the pitch, Chaudry’s spinners claimed three, and Rose returned to mop up the tail.

Radlett then batted with such confidence that a win was never in doubt. Amjad Khan was in prime form, racing to 34 out of 50 until he was adjudged lbw. Nick Ingram was next out, but by this time Radlett were well over halfway there. Radlett lost Ben Thornhill cheaply, but John Crocker’s muscular 25, costing the home side two lost balls, hastened the end. Dominic Ingram was the backbone, with his second consecutive score of over 50, batting with the assurance of a couple of years ago, and it was a confident looking Tim Smithers who was with Jim Chaudry at the death.

With batsmen the class of Hardy, Mark Evans and Tony Johnson still to come, there was batting to spare. It is this much stronger batting confidence that has improved Radlett’s fortunes this last month and a half.

Although this total was not a challenging one, in early May it might have proved tricky, but given good player availability, the stronger challenges that lie ahead don’t look insurmountable.

Radlett are the up and coming side in division five, and may well be feasting at the top table in September.
