Radlett CC 3rd XI v Holtwhites Trinibis on Sat 18 Jun 2005 at 1.30
Radlett CC Won 7 runs

Match report Radlett’s captain Richard Hardy had done his homework. Holtwhites, relegated last season, are determined to go straight back up. Consequently, they are prepared to chase runs, and aren’t afraid of losing. Every game where they have batted second they have won, and are in the promotion frame.

Thus when they won the toss, even on this the hottest day of the year, they put Radlett in to bat. Hardy’s instructions were to bat for the whole 53 overs and let the opposition toil and sweat, and mindful of the Holtwhites mindset and strengths, he had the gumption to be sadistically resolute.

This was comfortably Radlett’s best batting performance of the season. Underpinned by a chanceless 95 from Dominic Ingram, this was an excellent team batting performance with all the batsmen contributing quick runs, none better than Ingram’s younger and even dafter brother Nicholas, who contributed an accomplished 49 not out at better than a run a ball. This enabled a total of 243 for 7, with Holtwhites very tired and dispirited. The wicket was good for batting, but it was a good Holtwhites opening bowling attack, and Radlett gave an exemplary display of the value of a solid start laying the foundations for quick runs later.

For the first time this season, Radlett, with their most potent batting lineup so far, gave their bowlers something to aim at. But when Holtwhites came to bat, it was easy to see why they had won so many games. After 17 overs they were 100 without loss. Their top four batsmen were a class act, but it has to be said that, by and large, the Radlett bowling was filth. The ball was sprayed about more than a cat marking its territory, and an embarrassingly early finish looked on the cards.

Here came the really encouraging part of this performance, which has been the side’s strength all season. Faced with ignominy, the team, led with humour and no little wisdom by Hardy, refused to give up. The fielding was always upbeat and of a high standard, and with a couple of loose strokes by the batsmen, and an unlucky legside catch well taken by the admirable Tony Johnson, suddenly five wickets were down for 160, and with a good run rate under their belts, all was to play for on both sides.

Hardy had identified that Holtwhites weren’t interested in a draw, and despite some buffet bowling, Radlett, due to their own team tenacity, prevailed by just eight runs.

It has to be said that, even in this heat, the whole game was played in an excellent sporting spirit by both sides, with one Radlett batsman walking when given not out, and Radlett calling back a batsman who was given out erroneously. Holtwhites, despite their disappointment, also played the game graciously, showing that a really competitive match can still be played without screaming and posturing. How refreshing!

This was an excellent victory by a Radlett side that three weeks ago were bottom of the league. With three wins from the last four games how different it all looks now.
