Radlett CC 3rd XI v Northwood 11 on Sat 04 Jun 2005 at 1.30
Radlett CC Won 3wkts

Match report The day started badly enough when I found that my bike had been nicked. But compared with the skipper’s problems, I was living in a bed of roses.

With an already decimated team, the week had seen Radlett 3rd XI reduced by six. For non-cricketers, the numerically challenged, and Gordon Brown, that’s over half of an already weak side.

Richard Hardy’s biggest achievement was to get eleven people onto the field.

This was mostly accomplished by trawling the Cat & Fiddle late at night, a process akin to slipping the Queen’s shilling, which is also done at "Fudge", but in a different way.

Thus the team, with an average age of over 44, included three players who hadn’t been on a cricket field, not just this season, but for two or three of them, and some others to whom the game was played purely from memory. The euphemism for this arrangement is that the side is experienced.

Factor in that the Thirds have been the underachievers of the club, with but one victory in the season.

The result was a truly famous victory, played in the spirit of when one of this side, George Copley, played his last Saturday cricket match, fifteen years ago. In those days, it was ok for an 18 year old to bowl 8 overs in a row, league cricket was in its infancy, people didn’t appeal like fools and scream at umpires and demand a wicket and you were allowed to call young players Colts without fear of being branded sexist.

Cricket today is better in so many ways, which includes today’s game. Today every batsman made double figures, every fielder fielded well, all the bowlers contributed, and it seemed like a team game. The standard of umpiring was excellent, and both sides contributed to a day which they all enjoyed immensely. I know this because all of the other 21 players told me.

But it felt like George Copley’s cricket.

Of course, it is better when you win, but we just about deserved to, and if we had lost, it still would have been a good day.

Well maybe not that good, but anyway, when the average age is over 44, there aren’t any "Colts" to damage.
