Radlett CC 2nd XI v Northwood on Sat 20 Aug 2005 at 1.00
Radlett CC Won 20 runs
Match report
Radlett II took on the Northwood 1st XI at Cobden Hill, with both teams needing no less than a win but for very different reasons - Radlett to keep their division 2 status alive and 3rd place Northwood to maintain their promotion challenge.
Radlett lost the toss and were asked to bat. Jim Chaudry opened with Dave Robinson and runs flowed from the outset. Even though Radlett lost Chaudry lbw for a quickfire 17, Robinson was to be joined by Mike Yeabsley and between them they created a solid foundation. Both played commanding shots to all quarters with Robinson going on to make 62 and Yeabsley weighing in with 55, his third half century in four innings. There was further support from the younger contingent in the middle order lead by Mike Crocker (30) and Simon Gray (23*). Radlett’s final total of 237 for 7 set Northwood a reasonable challenge.
If Radlett were going to succeed then they would need not only another good all round fielding performance but also for the bowlers to get amongst the wickets. It was to be opening bowler Brian Dummer who came up trumps. Dummer returned his best figures for the club, 6 for 79 in 17.2 overs. His opening partner Jon Smithers chipped in with a miserly 7 overs before Jim Chaudry’s spell of 11 overs in which he took two wickets.
Radlett did not make the task easy by spilling chances as Northwood pushed for victory. All credit must go to Northwood for a fight to the end. Even though 21 runs were still needed in the last over with only a single wicket left, they chased the victory, even though Dummer had returned. A lusty blow into the deep which on many grounds would have been a clean six, found its way into the safe hands of Robbie Crocker and Radlett took the 30 points which, at this stage in the season, were oh so precious.
This Saturday sees the penultimate game of the league season with Radlett travelling to Abbots Langley knowing that they will need to do it all over again if they are going to finally lift themselves out of the relegation zone.
