Match report Catches win matches, so the old adage goes, and it was never truer than in this match. Playing undefeated, top-of-the table Bishops Stortford, Radlett could have had them 70-3, chasing 173, with every opportunity to apply pressure. Alas, two chances went begging and the two let-off batsmen made the most of their escapes to post winning scores.

That Radlett were in with a chance seemed remote at 130-9, with 6 overs of their innings remaining, having been put in to bat. Dave Robinson had withstood the early barrage, but was superbly caught in the gully for 31. The only other notable contribution had been a classy 36 from Mike Crocker. Last wicket pair Colin Warne and Mark Gray decided to squeeze what runs they could from the first four overs they faced, then Colin set about the bowling in the last two overs. Both spinner and feared Aussie opening bowler were smashed to all parts of the ground, to secure 3 valuable batting points and put Radlett in with a chance of at least making Stortford work for their win.

With Paynter securing an early victim, spirits were raised. The Radlett bowling was much tighter than in previous weeks and the Stortford batsmen had to work hard for their runs initially. But with two ensuing chances spurned, Radlett found the game going away from them. An excellent late spell from leg-spinner Mark Gray showed what difficulties could have been posed to Stortford's middle-order if Radlett had posted a bigger total and taken their chances.
