Match report
Last Sunday an odd throwback of a cricket match took place. Tony Peck dragged together a ragbag of talent and tripe, fantasy and filth to play on the top pitch.
The resultant game included a mosaic of good, bad, and yes, downright repulsive.
There was the majestic batting of Andy Hayes to compare with the sight of Ingram stumped by a full three yards, splayed in mid-pitch like a nun taking Holy Orders.
There the superb spin bowling of Mark Gray (sixfer) to compare with Peck himself trying to get the batsmen out by making them laugh.
And of there was Chris Barnes taking a stinger of a catch at slip with some panache to compare with Coco completely missing the ball and not only blaming it on the long grass, but claiming that the ball had been stolen by a family of Hottentots who had been living there for some years.
The game was played with “a declaration and 6:30 plus twenty overs”, words that you thought perhaps never to hear again. When the umpire was verbally abused for calling a wide, he responded that the bowler should never be bowling at that age, and that he hadn’t been bribed enough.
When one of the opposition wickets fell, there was the obvious scene of wild jubilation and high fives. Well ok that’s an exaggeration – ten players slowly made their way to the centre of the field to clap the batsman off, but strangely there was no Mike Dexter. He was spotted expelling excess fluid in the hedge. When he came back shaking his hands complaining of stinging nettles, it was observed that perhaps he was lucky only to sting his hands, to which he replied “Oh no, they weren’t that high!”
This was a glorious day’s cricket, designed for nothing but pure enjoyment. No points to win or lose, no reputations to worry about, and to an extent even the result was almost unimportant. Just a day for a few people to get together in the fresh air and have a laugh at and with each other.
Nobody offended, no bats hurled, hardly any swearing, and a really wonderful way to spend the day.
What’s the harm in that?
