Radlett CC 2nd XI v Old Albanians on Sat 07 May 2005 at 1.30
Radlett CC Won 1 wicket

Match report A SENSE of deja vu intensified the disappointment for Old Albanians on Saturday as home team Radlett II delivered a spectacular finale.

For the second week in succession OA skipper Robert Bee's side lost a thrilling encounter by a single wicket. That this match was even closer than the previous weekend's, coming down to the very last ball, was of very little consolation to the visitors.

OAs won the toss and skipper Bee had little hesitation in choosing to bat. His faith was justified by another excellent opening stand between David Rourke (38) and Alf Rehman. Rehman looked in particularly good touch, unleashing a series of drives and demonstrating a scant regard for the reputations of the opposition. The opener went on to make an excellent (50), his maiden half century for the First XI. Rourke's departure brought Paul Richardson to the crease, on his return to first XI cricket, and Richardson displayed much unruffled class in compiling a solid (20) before being bowled. The OA score gained some much needed momentum from Simon Wood, who continued his excellent early season form with 44 not out.

Radlett fought back with a flurry of wickets at the end of the innings and OAs ended on 179 for 8 which the Woollams men felt they could defend. Mark Evans took three wickets for Radlett and Ian 'Oz' Edwards and Brian Dummer each got a brace.

OAs appeared to be on the way to justifying their confidence as the Radlett top order struggled to come to terms with the opening attack of Andrew 'Turtle' McLean (4-47) and Perry Hall. McLean in particular bowled a hostile spell asking questions of the batsmen. This good work was continued by Andrew McCree, as he bowled a good spell of slow right arm into the wind. With some improved fielding highlighted by Tariq Hussan's neat catch in the gully OAs had the hosts in trouble at 77 for 7 after opener Nigel Barlow had gone for 12 and Nick Hampton for 24.

Radlett hopes rested with skipper Ian 'Oz' Edwards who remained at the crease, and he always looked like a man who felt he could take his team to victory. He began to launch calculated attacks on the OAs bowling and progressed past his 50. As the finish became tighter OAs became more ragged, and Radlett moved to within eight runs of victory with two overs and wickets remaining.

McLean then bowled a perfect over, conceding just two runs and clean bowling Brian Dummer (28). Hall then bowled the last over, conceding a number of scampered singles, including one where Wood was a whisker away from engineering what would have been a match winning run out. The final ball saw Edwards on strike with the scores level. The Radlett skipper capped his own performance in an appropriate manner by smashing the ball high over mid on for four to take his personally tally on to 73 not out. An exciting match ended with Radlett taking the win on 183-9.
