Little B Sahibs v Radlett CC 3rd XI on Sat 30 Apr 2005 at 1:30
Radlett CC Lost 3 wkts
Match report
Richard Hardy’s first game as captain of the Thirds was a strange affair. The pitch and outfield at Little Berkamstead were very damp, but the dry weather caused the pitch to get progressively more benign during the game.
Thus being put in to bat by the home side was significant. The bowlers put the ball on the spot and let the pitch do the work. Aided by some very rusty batting, Radlett were bowled out for what appeared a paltry 81, which would have been even less had LBS not dropped about seven catches, most of them simple.
The only batter on either to show any permanence was Amjad Khan, has been hiding in a wardrobe since 2000, and this was his first game back. He showed the patience and technique required, and scored half of Radlett’s runs, which contained not a single extra.
As it turned out, this was almost, but not quite enough runs to win the match. Radlett bowled extremely well, Chris Brown, the duck-like bowler from Sawbridgeworth taking a throroughly deserved 4 for 16 from his ten beautifully controlled overs.
Radlett’s fielding continued its extremely high standard from last season, with Hardy and Dennis Irwin taking very difficult catches with panache. The ground fielding was also very keen, and is a mirror of the enthusiasm of this side.
This is not perhaps though, the view of Oliver Robertson, the team’s vice captain. Robertson, a professional dancer from Zimbabwe, feels that there may not have been sufficient belief in the chance of victory. This reflects his own very competitive nature, and is a credit to him. He is also correct, because Radlett took seven opposition wickets before they made the 82 runs required to win.
So another twenty would probably have been enough to win the game. It was a fascinating and close-fought game, and the blame for this defeat lays squarely on the batsmen. But that only needs a bit of practice; the raw materials are there for what is looking to be a very enjoyable season.
Finally, I would like to use this public platform to appeal to Nick Fielden to bring my wheelbarrow back.
Thank you.
