Radlett CC 1st XI v Knebworth Park on Sat 09 Jul 2005 at 11:30
Radlett CC Won 7 wickets
Match report
Radlett started the league ‘run in’ in fine style against Knebworth Park on Saturday. With West Herts holding a points advantage at the top of the table it was important that Radlett achieved a win. Skipper Haydn Smith was missing due to injury and stand in captain Dan Chippeck started the day well by winning the toss.
Chippeck used the new ball with Simon Jackson and Stuart Browne. Both bowled good balls and kept Knebworth on the back foot. Despite good bowling only one wicket was picked up in the opening twenty overs. Radlett then maintained a consistent over rate and bowled tidily with Graham Dill and David Hegarty bowling important spells. It was Browne who finished with 4-64 and took the plaudits with an excellent spell of seam and swing bowling, backed up well by good fielding keeping Knebworth under 200, at 191-8.
Excellent bowling made this chase difficult. Both opening bowlers were superb and credit must go to Nick Hampton and Nick Fielden who handled the tricky conditions professionally. Hampton was positive and fell on 43, leaving Fielden to bat through the innings. This he did in fine style, following up his hundred against West Herts with a superlative 90 not out. Steve Lowe also was not out making a flowing 40, and playing clips to leg with great power.
The loss of only three wickets was deceptive; Knebworth bowled very well and were a little unlucky in seaming conditions, but Radlett’s in form batters battled hard to ensure victory. Fielden in particular was tactically very good to adapt his game to meet the challenge of the bowlers and used his feet cleverly. Lowe continued from his match winning Evening Standard innings and was able to find the gaps with precision. The victory was brought about with a lovely Lowe shot over extra cover with three overs to spare. Fielden was left unbeaten at the other end having batted through the whole innings, with his batting against the new ball very impressive indeed.
Dan Chippeck had done his job as skipper well, 25 points in the bag as continued the team patterns with calm assurance. Team spirit is high, individual games are good and collectively the team is working well as a unit and it was a happy dressing room that reflected on another fine performance after the game.
