Radlett CC 1st XI v Langleybury on Sat 02 Jul 2005 at 11:30
Radlett CC Won 18 runs

Match report Radlett welcomed Langleybury to Cobden Hill for the last game before the halfway point in the season. Both sides needed to win the game to enhance their status in the division.

The coin landed on the wrong side again for Radlett and they were inserted on a pitch offering some help to the bowlers. Nick Hampton and Shane Burger opened up and clinically dispatched the bad ball to the boundary before Burger fell to an expansive shot for 31. Rob Smith carried on his good form with a well-paced, classy 34.

Hampton was to play an innings typical of the vintage of 2003. He was certain in his shot selection and timed the ball beautifully. He anchored the whole innings and deservedly reached his hundred in the over of Radlett’s declaration. At 152-4 the innings was well poised yet Hampton stepped up the pace with several big hits but also with excellent running between the wickets. He found support, adding a 100 partnership with Graham Dill who got 35 not out. The pace the innings was increased allowed skipper Hayden Smith to declare after 53 overs on 254-4; an attacking move which would ultimately prove crucial. Hampton, restored to opener, had done his job meticulously and given the team 57 overs to bowl out Langleybury.

It was with the very last ball of that 57th over that victory was secured. A sight not often seen is a bowler running at full pace to the boundary being chased by all his team mates after a last ball match winning wicket. It was Stuart Browne with the very last ball of the match, who managed to induce the mistake, hit the pads and gain the vital 25 points. An extraordinary finish to a great game. Browne collecting six well deserved wickets bowling unchanged from one end.

Yet it all could have been so different; only 38 needed from 7 overs with 5 wickets in hand was the equation for the away team. The collective will of Radlett was to prove decisive as slowly but surely they chipped away the wickets whilst restricting the runs. Credit must go to Smith the captain for another crucial spell of bowling as he bagged three late wickets.

Langleybury’s Malik had bagged 116 of the finest runs seen at Radlett since the days of Carr and Voss, and put his side in sight of victory. The ball was in the air a long time before Ian Edwards steady nerve clutched the chance on the boundary that ended an astonishing knock. Malik deserved more for his wristy genius but could not quite take his team the whole way. It was Browne who was to have the last word as he dragged his tired legs in for one last delivery, won the spoils for Radlett and then set off at high speed, in a whirl of celebrations with his jubilant team mates.
