Hemel Hempstead Town v Radlett CC 1st XI on Sat 25 Jun 2005 at 11:30
Match was Drawn

Match report Radlett put in their strongest performance of the year against Hemel Hempstead on Saturday but were to be denied a win. Losing another toss meant batting first on an extremely seamer friendly wicket. Excellent bowling by Waterman was to go unrewarded as he beat the edge of the Radlett bat many times.

Shane Burger, promoted to opener, was to play a technically excellent innings in very trying conditions. He played very straight in making 118 not out and batting through 60 overs. This in itself was a triumph. This was Burger's first hundred in England and re-enforced the feeling he is not only a very fine bowler but also an equally good batsman. His professionalism was written all over the innings with quality shots and fine defence in what was very difficult conditions to bat on. Make no mistake, this was an innings of great class.

Daniel Chippeck, deservedly promoted to 4, was to secure the foundations of the innings until another in a run of bad decisions, was to cost him his wicket on 49. He had batted carefully and then started to expand; powerfully hitting straight back over the bowlers head into the canal, his sweep also safely dispatching the off spinner to the boundary.

Brendan Hutchings really is a man in form. Rock solid defence was again mixed with wonderful ball striking and he has provided the team with a number 5 batsman who is able to accelerate the innings fantastically well by playing excellent and well chosen shots. Time and again the ball was timed crisply and disappeared over the ropes. 58 not out was his reward as he and Burger steered the team to an unlikely 241 – 3 off 60 overs. 150 would have been a good score.

In return suddenly the pitch looked different. Stuart Browne was nigh on unplayable and unfortunately the Hemel batsman had no attacking shots against him. He was to bowl his 28 overs for 32 runs and take 4 wickets. He beat the bat many times and should have been rewarded with more. From the other end Graham Dill picked up two early wickets and Ian Edwards was to also claim two wickets late on to give Radlett’s prospective victory a lift.

It was not to be as Hemel were left on 113 -8 off 55 overs, under two runs an over. Winning the toss and bowling yielded them 5 points, 3 of those for the draw. Radlett had to settle for 14, but it was a satisfied dressing room with the standard of cricket played, excellent in all departments. A total of 241 -3 was outstanding work, the bowlers bowled tight lines and the fielding and commitment excellent.

Radlett look forward to the opportunity to play Langleybury on Saturday and hope to keep their season's momentum rolling.
