Radlett CC 1st XI v West Herts on Sat 18 Jun 2005 at 11:30
Radlett CC Won 6 wickets

Match report Radlett welcomed league leaders West Herts to Cobden Hill for their first meeting of the season. On a hot day Hayden Smith won the toss and decided to insert the opposition into bat. Opening batsmen and the West Herts overseas player was a man in form with back-to-back league hundreds, but was removed for nought by an excellent delivery from Stuart Browne. This early success was tempered by the loss of Shane Burger after only three overs after injuring his side. Ian ‘Oz’ Edwards stepped up and proceeded to remove another West Herts batsman to leave them 17-2. Captain Matt Smith and opener Spencer Fan steadied the West Herts ship with intelligent batting, Smith playing nice shots down the ground. This partnership was broken by Browne as Fan misread the length and was caught behind. At lunch the game was tight at 125-3 off 37 overs.

After lunch, wickets in hand proved crucial and West Herts hit out well to post 279-6. Browne and Edwards bowled well and their excellent early work, when restricting West Herts before lunch, was to be rewarded with an outstanding run chase.

After the loss of Dill, Nick Fielden and Rob Smith set about their task with skill and placement. Fielden was setting himself for a big one and anchored the Radlett innings with a gutsy and heat sapping 104. He found the boundaries with sensible shots but also ran between the wickets with great purpose. Rob Smith ‘purred’ to 50 with effortless timing and strokes to all parts, his fluency enabled Radlett to reach tea well placed for an assault on the target. After tea Smith fell for 80, another classy knock from the former Herts Star. Smith has added an extra dimension to an already strong batting line up.

With Fielden providing the foil, Nick Hampton’s 38 kept the momentum going with a shot a ball innings finding the gaps with certainty. These two both fell but Radlett’s strength in depth was to be the deciding factor as Brendan Hutchings and captain Hayden Smith came in and flayed the bad ball to the boundary; yet crucially scored 1 or 2 off nearly every other ball. Smith followed his destruction of ‘Sawbo’ with another 24 not out, but it was Hutchings who was to finish the match in great style with a huge 6, pulled off the West Herts paceman and finishing on the railway track.

A fantastic days cricket had been witnessed. The umpires agreed it was the best game they had seen this year and played in great spirit between the two teams. A brilliantly managed chase by the Radlett batsmen enabled them to emerge victorious and close the gap at the top. West Herts remain at the summit of the division but Radlett are now a little nearer.
