St.Margaretsbury v Radlett CC 1st XI on Sat 04 Jun 2005 at 11:30
Match was Drawn

Match report Radlett travelled to St Margeretsbury looking to build on a good start to the year. Losing another toss meant Radlett had to bat first on a helpful wicket for seam bowling. The openers Graham Dill and Nick Hampton dug in and ensured early wickets did not fall by careful defending and selective attacking shots. At 60-0 the innings was progressing nicely. Then quick wickets checked Radlett momentum as Hampton fell for an impressive 28. Steve Lowe and Shane Burger fell victims to tight home bowling. Graham Dill fell to a sharp catch for 38 which left Hayden Smith and Brendan Hutchings to steady the ship.

It was 102-4 at lunch with the game poised nicely. Brendan Hutchings provided the secure base for the final Radlett total of 178-9. He looked in total control for his 41, played some excellent shots and fell only chasing quick runs at the end. Heath Paynter and Ollie Robertson both provided key support for Brendan with some fine hitting and aggressive running between the wickets. With the pitch still offering some help for the bowlers the game could go either way.

Radlett were determined to impose themselves and at 20-4 had obliterated the St Margeretsbury top order. Burger doing the damage with three early wickets, all caught behind. Ian ‘Oz’ Edwards provided the danger at the other end, swinging the ball both ways and being unlucky not to claim more the one scalp. After tea the batsmen played sensibly to claw their way back into the match. It was Burger again who broke through with a devastating ball which swung in late and uprooted the off stump of Brown for a well played 44; Brown had earlier bowled 28 overs and taken 4 wickets and been a pivotal player on the day for the home team.

With 60 needed and five wickets left St Margeretsbury started to play their shots. Dill came into the attack and claimed two wickets in an over to make Radlett favourites. Burger was reintroduced but number 8 Anstead kept hitting out. The ball started finding the boundary, chances never quite fell to hand and Radlett failed to bowl the necessary balls to take the three vital wickets. With 12 needed off the final over Anstead plundered a boundary to take him to 24, but was then run out next ball, by Edwards, seeking a second run. A boundary off the last ball would win it for St Margeretsbury but Burger ensured a draw for Radlett with a yorker and a fantastic game ended with the home team 177-8 and with neither side quite being able to grab victory. Credit must go to both umpires who had fine games and to both sides in a hard fought battle played in good spirit.
