Match report
RADLETT met their match on Saturday as Welwyn Garden City smashed an intimidating score at Cobden Hill.
Captain Haydn Smith won the toss for Radlett and decided to insert Welwyn on a pitch which looked to have something for the bowlers to work with.
After an early dismissal Welwyn gained control and Martin James and Mark 'Spiller' Everett steadily took the score on to 101-1 off 36 overs. They showed great concentration and composure in dealing with some dangerous bowling from Shane Burger for Radlett.
After lunch Welwyn pushed on and shots rained around the ground in all directions except into the hands of a Radlett fielder. Skipper Ben Fraser and Simon White who smashed some sixes upped the run rate and Radlett were left staring down the barrel as Welwyn ended on 273-4. Radlett vice captain Graham Dill said: "We felt 240 would have been achievable in reply but we had to give it a go all the same." David Hegarty took 3-28 for Radlett.
A good start to the chase was vital for the Cobden Hill outfit and the loss of opener Nick Fielden did not help. That left Graham Dill and Rob Smith at the crease and the pair put on 90 in 14 overs to push Radlett into a position to challenge for a win. Dill made 36 from boundaries and Rob Smith batted superbly for his 71. Radlett were now flying at seven-an-over but Dill got himself out for 40 after struggling on shot selection from a long hopper and Smith followed.
Shane Burger and Brenden Hutchings (17) pushed the score on to 120 and Radlett were in with a chance but, when Burger was blasted out for 21, Graham Dill felt the match turned back in Welwyn's favour. He said: "We had to get five-an-over at this point and with Shane in I felt it was a 50-50 game. His dismissal turned it."
Radlett soon lost Haydn Smith for eight when he was looking good and further wickets tumbled before Ian Edwards and David Hanson stood their ground. Hanson was eventually bowled after good defensive play had kept the partnership together for 13 overs. This left Welwyn nine balls to get the last wicket but they failed as Edwards ended on 21 not out and Radlett were delighted to maintain their unbeaten start to the season. They finished on 205-9.
